Well due to my bike letting me down on the way to a bike rally I had been looking forward to for months,I've decided I need a newer bike better suited for long distance 2 up riding.I won't be ready to buy until spring but I want to start doing my homework now.
The V-Strom 1000 looks pretty interesting,do any of you have any experience with these or know anybody that has one?

They are excellent bikes - high on my personal preference list too. You may find the 650 is worth looking at too -- less expensive both to purchase and insure, and many riders prefer it. For two-up, especially if you're not small people, you may want the 1000 after all. Be aware of the weight difference though -- will limit your away-from-the-pavement options (won't say "off road" because these bikes really aren't made for that).

    Check out:
StromTrooper -- excellent owner's site with much information

V-Strom Riders International -- the "official" owner's site

And of course, ADV Rider always has TONS and TONS of good discussion on adventure riding, and V-Strom's get talked about often.

I ride a V-Strom 1000 as my 2-up adventure bike. It certainly has plenty of power, borrowing it's motor from the terrifyingly torquey TL1000R/S. It's a great bike for super long rides on road. Also, it does pretty darn good off road (from my personal experience). Get the DL1000 if you want to ride 2-up. You won't notice the extra weight once you put real handlebars and a fork brace on it.

I Love the 650 , most comfortable thing I've done a test sit on to date.....
The ergos are just perfect for me, just a hair tall, but a lowering kit would fix that.

I've yet to hear anything bad about either one the 650 or 1000
Except some find them ugly, I think Unique is a better word...
