? about the battery

What is it that makes a battery drain so fast while the bikes shut off over night, i got my 80 XJ650 2 weeks ago and it had a dead bettery in it then.

I had to order one from the Yamaha dealer, and picked it up on Saturday, put it in, and the bike started up with some good fuel in it.

On Sunday its dead after sitting overnight. :idea: :?: :idea:

 

I have had experences with the same problem. I has always turned out to be the voltage regulator in the charging system. I am not saying that is definetly that it could be other things.
My method for checking:
Disconnect battery positive and hook a ammeter , note the reading
Start pulling fuses until the meter reads 0 , if not
Unplug devices on the wiring harness starting with the voltage regulator.
When you find the citcuit that makes the meter read 0 start troubleshoting that one to find the exact componet.

 

I forgot, keep your battery disconnected until you find the problem. You will ruin the battery if it gets fully discharged several times. I have learned the hard way.

 

Sounds like a plan, the only thing is, i guess theres suppost to be 4 of those glass tube type fuses in the fuse box, but theres only 2 now. Looks ae if the last owner took the wires for the taillight, and the main, and spliced a blade type fuse into the main, and tail.

So now i have a goos reason to up grade the whole fuse box with a new one. :wink:

 

Its time to upgrade your fuse block. Do that first then start looking for that batterry drain.

 

AND don't let that new battery sit around discharged, that ruins them.

Ideally a lead-acid battery is always fully charged.

 

Am i gonna be ok for atleast a week, untill i can get a charger for it? The problem is i drive a big truck and will be gone all week.

 

Technically they start to have damage anytime they aren't fully charged.

Will it shorten the life - yes.

Will it be useless in a week - I don't know.

 

Well i guess ill have to wake my brother up from the dead, and get him to run it over to autozone for a free charge. :idea:

 

Be careful they don't cook it for you using an automotive charger. These batteries shouldn't be charged at anymore than 2A/hr; 1A/hr is even better. Gotta "trickle charge" by automotive standards...
