ok guys I'm stuck I just replaced my starter solinoid because any time I tried to connect the battery even with the ignition off the bike would try to turn over and I was told that the solinoid was stuck so I just replaced it but once I connected the battery it tried to turn over again. The po did alot of stupid crap to the bikes wiring but all in all it looks fairly complete.

I could use some help guys either some advice or if anyone lives near by that owns an 85-86 xj700 or that knows enough to save my rear end on this that could help I would greatly appreciate it.

Unplug the pigtail wires going to the solenoid. Test the R/W wire on the HARNESS for 12V with the ignition OFF while pushing the Start button. No power = good. 12V Present = bike hot-wired ... trace start circuit line for Non-OEM looking splice, taped-up wires or suspicious looking "extraneous" wiring.

Turn ignition ON. Test R/W wire on harness for 12V without touching the Start Button.
12V Present = Bad Start switch.

As rick suggests , first unplug the 2 small wires with ignition OFF that go to sillynoid , no turn over? , good , then look for a reason that 12v is on one one those wires [as it should not be] when ignition not on and unpressed start button..

There has to be a reason so look for a modification , trace the wire...

I guess I'm just dumb I can't figure it out I did what you guys sugested and traced the harness and there are no spliced in wires. as to tested things I'm not sure whats what because I never got to see it intact everything was disconnected when I got the bike

Unplug every Red wire and every Red wire with a White stripe inside the headlight bucket.

The Red wires should test for 12V Hot - or 12V Hot with the Ignition ON - OFF with the Ignition OFF.

The Red wires with the White stripes should test for 12V On/Off with controlled by the Ignition switch ... AND:

    Kill switch.
    Start button.

Check to see if the Kill switch's wire and the Start button's wire are plugged into the right circuit. You can either spend some time with lights, meters and jumper cables ... or, just do:

    "The Old School Method"
Reverse them ... see what happens!

If this approach doesn't work ... we're going to need a Witch and an Exorcist because the bike is possessed by Evil Spirits and needs to have the curses and all evil cast-out and then blessed to be returned to its purified state!

Have the Priest top-off the battery with Holy Water and the Witch spit in the gas tank. All the demons should be driven away and we'll be able to get a fresh start on wiring it up right! : )

See if either one of them has a ColorTune Plug; too. Might as well have them set the mixtures right while they're chasing away the gremlins.
