I hope this is okay but I've got a discussion topic to throw out there.
What kind of long trip has everyone taken on their XJ? I've finally got to take mine out for more than just a quick jaunt and went a whopping 80 miles RT. Not much I know, but it's a start.

    So.....discuss.........

My long trip with a destination was to Allentown, PA from Baltimore, MD. Met up with some guys from this site. A good time. About 150 miles each way. Normally I just ride large circles around my house or varying types of roads. Most of my riding is in the evenings after work with work the next day so I don't stray far.

I just completed a trip from Cleveland, OH to San Francisco, CA stopping at Mount Rushmore, outside of Denver, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. Fun times! Just be prepared for mechanical head aches.

My long Trip was 250 mile round trip. Each mile it seemed to run better. Then a week after getting home (and registering the bike) I could not shift out of first, now I'm down for the rest of the season.

On the 80XJ650 I had, I ran 120mi round trip with no problems.
On the 80XS1100 I've taken it just under 520mi round trip. Only problems I had were a couple Possums that came out into the road right at dusk.

I mainly rode my 81 Maxim 550 around Charleston, S.C. But often went on rides for the entire day...over 200 miles. I never had a problem with that bike. It never stranded me.

On my '83 Maxim 750 I rode it out to Sturgis (915 miles) in 1999. I took 2 days to get out there. The first day was 90% in a driving rainstorm...all the way from Ann Arbor, MI to Iowa. On the way home I extended the trip to 1115 miles by going thru Wisconsin, Minnesota, and down thru Chicago. It took me 21 hours and 15 minute. Yep...I rode straight thru on an unofficial iron-butt. Not a single problem with that bike.
    It never stranded me either.

I just bought the wife her 82 Maxim 650 and took her on a 120 mile bike ride last Friday. The only problem she had was that she ran it out of gas after leaveing my workplace...the engine died on the freeway. After thinking she'd have to walk home a biker stopped and helped her...switched it to prime, started it, and then transferred over to reserve (I ended the ride after 108.7 miles at my workplace). She left her cell phone at home or could have called me. Doing the math it all adds up. Started with a full tank...about 3.4 gallons. 115 miles is 2.3 gallons, getting almost 50mpg. And 1.1 gallon of reserve (I know it should be 1 gallon).

Those are some miles! I love my XJ for around town and those quick 100 mile round trip rides down the Columbia River gorge. Anything over a couple hundred miles in a day I ride the Beemer. The XJ is an absolute hoot to ride after climbing off of 847 lbs of Beemer. It used to feel heavy and big and now it feels as light as a crotch rocket must feel.

The XJ is also a lot more fun to work on.

if your unfortunate enough to get a flat or run out of gas, five miles is a real long trip

My bike is going to have to prove itself a lot more before I take any trips. I'm still working on all the glitches that seem to be inherent with it.

I do a minimum of 50 mi a day, 5 days aweek back and forth to work.

Every once in a while I'll make a day trip up to Cleveland or out to Pittsburgh, about 65 mi one way.

I am having a new saddle fabbed up to help my tired old bones with the longer rides. Hopefully SWMBO and I will get some real road time in next season.

Well here is an update, I don't think I will be heading out on this trip. There are to many things as far as routine maint. that still need to be done on my bike :( I only have myself to blame but, I will definalty do a run next season.

I took a nice 420km (261 mile) trip yesterday. From Tavi, went over to Grandbend, then north to Port Elgin, and back southeast through Listowel to Tavi again.

I left, I think, around 11:30am and didn't get home till 6:30pm. Lemme tell ya, after 420km, that 400's seat doesn't make for a comfy ride. My butt HURT bad hahahah.

Here's the route I took if anyone wants to see it.

    http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?hl=en&sou ... 58dcb3&z=8

I dunno if I could do anything more than that in a day, i'm pretty sore this morning. That could be due to me being 6'3" 300 pounds on a little 400 too lol :)

Ruby didn't miss a beat tho, ran real nice. I noticed she runs much smoother after the valve clearance adjustment.

Got 200km to reserve on both fill ups, worked out well as I filled up in Kincardine and made it home about 15km into reserve.

I had no idea there were so many wind turbine mills on the coast lol. But like the commercial says, Ontario, it's our to discover right :)

Wow Kr, that looks like a nice ride. I'll have to figure out the map deal and save my trips.

I'm enjoying reading everybodies stories. I hope it quits raining around here so I can get out this week-end.

You guys go for short rides :) Longest in one day by me was from Riverside Ca. to Denver Co. Two days later same thing only from Denver to Riverside in one day.. Yup asperin was my best friend Was fun doing aobut 1000 miles a day but I was sore!! Best part was it was in October and snowing in the Rockies. Went by one person who had a motorcycle in the back of there truck and waved to him... He took my picture LOL
Also took the GF from my house in Riverside to Yosemite by way of the western Sierra's. Never stayed on a freeway for more than 45 minutes. Took mainly mountain or side roads all the way there. Spend the first night in Lake Isabella. Road all day on mountain roads through Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon Park then off to Oakhurst to spend the night. Did Yosemite and the Eastern Sierras and the worlds largets dynamometer, Hwy 395 all the way home. Bad part is it was the GF's first ride and it was HOT on the eastern Sierra's. She started whining, I opened up her jacket and poured my bottle of ice cold water on her just to shut her up, zipped up her jacket and we were off. Amazing how 80 to 90 mph drowns her out :D
