KBarmansr and myself both live in Ohio, about an hour or so apart. I also seen someone from Charelston, WV looking for a carb clinic.

I would like to have a carb clinic, but I don't feel I have the EXP. to host one, but would be willing to at least "host" it. I have a 2.5 car garage. Not really set up as a shop. Im using a card table currently for tearing up my carbs.

If someone with a carbtune, colortune and some tools would like to help out Im sure we could all pull together and get some carbs tuned up. fter reading about the MA clinic, Im stoked for the sweet sound of a well running engine again.

Any comments would be appreciated, and Im sure we can come up with a clinic before it snows...

Sounds liek a plan, I have the carbtune, but not the color tune. I have a good mechanical knowledge of the carberatoir, as well as the rest of the bike. We'll have to see what we can get together. On another note, anyone looking for a ride this wekend? The weather is supposed to be nice, and here in Ohio, as we know the weather might start ot get cold soon enought.

Man I would be willing to drive ANYWHERE in Ohio for a carb clinic. My carbs are in need of synching and I would really like someone who is familiar with these bikes to walk me through it once. Synching carbs is about the only thing I've never done on a bike. All my others just seemed to stay in a good state of tune for a long, long time.

As for a ride..... I'm game for that too. I currently live on the east side of Columbus, but I like to ride anytime anywhere (gotta admit south-east Ohio is my favorite though).

JRinehart, are you by chance up around the firelands area? My cousins lived in Plymouth and if I remember correctly there were a lot of Rinhart's in that area.

I grew up basically in the middle of a cornfield in the middle of the New Washington/Willard/Shelby area. Half way between Celeryville and Tiro (home of the Testicle Festival - you'll have a BALL) if you really want to get redneck about it.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and my PM box.

Hey I know where all those places are actually, I am right down the road from Willard actually, I grew up in Monroeville. So I know about the corn fields, lol. Yeah we are working on getting a crab clinic together hopefully sooner than later, if you know what I mean. i live in Norwalk now, and have the space in the shop to put on a clinic, haven't got the colortune as of yet, but set mix to factory or a little richer with pilot. I do have carbtune, and all the other tools tha twe need. If I can get a date together and get my schedule clear I will post and we can get together and have us an Ohio carb clinic. As for the ride, anytime, I just enjoy the ride, maybe we could all meet somewhere and do a weekend ride or something, just love the wind in my face and the noise from the road in my ears. Take it easy and I'll post witha date soon, hopefully.

I'm from SE Michigan and can bring a 14mm colour tune plug, blanking tool and vacuum gauges to a clinic in Ohio. I think a clinic in April or May of 2007 would be appropriate.

Great....By the spring I'll have a list of available tools and equipment. I know we'll need a fuel source such as an old lawn mower fuel tank. If someone comes across one or more keep them for the clinic. When spring rolles around, I'll post a few pre-clinic things we need to do to our bikes before tuning such as new air filter, in-line fuel filter, spark plugs etc. It's going to be a long winter!!!

According to a weatherman, the winter in MI, at least, is supposed to be mild. That being said, I'll believe it when I see it.

As for the alternative fuel source, I am going to make one from the directions on the XJCD, so I'll definitely bring that along. I've priced them out in various places, and man, they're expensive! For something so simple, they sure jack up the price.

Hey guys, Charleston, WV here. Ohio would be great. I have a 14mm Colortune, homemade YICS blanking tool, and a homemade carb balancing stick (2 lines). I would love to get together with you with you guys to work on these. I have VERY LIMITED knowledge, but have used the tools to adjust mine. Runs pretty good up to 3500 RPM's, them coughs and sputters like it's out of fuel. I'm sure carbs need a rebuild. Let me know when we can all get together. I'll need a couple weeks notice to make a trip to Ohio. BTW, '82 XJ650

Hello again all, I am up for a spring time carb clinic, the shop will be open and I have the fuel supply and carb sync tool here. I don't have a colortune here, but am working on that. I have plenty of space and tools for a large group. Let's put our heads together and get this this under construction so we can let everyone know when and where. And I do have some couches and floor space available for sleeping if needed. Talk to you all soon.

Great! I have a colortune, and would be happy to bring that and my carbtune II and my alternate fuel source.

    Looking forward to it!

My Vacuum gauges just came in. Who's bringing the colortune?

Also, I will bring the valve shim tool. Factory service manual says set valves before syncing. Check the valve adjustments and bring the new shims with you.

Now we just need a date and place........

Awesome pics, thanks. What should the clearance be? Are the intake and exhaust valves different?

That's ok. Someone needs to be in charge of beer anyhow.

    jandphisted:

    Intake 0.11~0.15mm (0.004~0.006 in)
    Exhaust 0.16~0.20mm (0.006~0.008 in)

When and where will the clinic be held? This is my first bike and haven't ridden it much because of idle issues and weather. Got the bike fixed and now need some fine tuning. I don't have a 12mm color tune yet nor do I think I will be able to get one soon. Depending on when, I might have enough ride time to do a short interstate trip if it is close to the Cleveland area.

Hey, Im back on the forums...when the snow started flying the re-build was put on hold and I just closed my eyes when I passed the bike in the garage. Now the suns back out and its getting warm so I can see the need to fix this bugger up.

I'm in Garfield Heights so pretty much anywhere in Northeast Ohio is good with me. I don't have a 12mm colortune nor will I be able to get one within the next several months. Hopefully I can get the valves done in the next couple of weeks as I have four that are tight. I just have to source a cheap place for the shims, the stealership wants TWELVE BUCKS EACH!! I don't think so! Let me know when and where.

I don't mean to threadjack, and I realize this isn't Ohio, but I went back to a local salvage yard out here that has them for $5 a pop; yes, I do believe they take internet orders. Google for "Stockers".

Thanks for the tip schmuckaholic but I found a speed shop about a mile from my house that had them for six bucks each. While I was there I got some info on exhaust and other mods that I might be doing. Got the valves set right and it runs alot better but the idle is still a bit bumpy and has a tiny stumble right off idle under a load.
    James
Oh yeah- The shop is Krol Cycle in Garfield Heights. The owner is a drag racer and is doing some sick things on two wheels. He has a seven second Suzuki- no nitrous or boost, and just finished building a top fuel bike.
Let me know when and where for the clinic and I'll be there

I am in desparate need of help with my '83 XJ900. I am at wits end and about ready to give up totaly.

When I got the bike it wouldn't run at all --cleaned the carbs and was able to get it to run last fall. I changed the oil and stored it with some seafoam mixed with the gas over the winter. Had difficulty starting this spring so I pulled the carbs again and recleaned them -- got it to start but would not idle only ran with the "choke" on about 1/4 and then with high idle. pulled carbs again after trying to adj the mixture screws with no avail. Now it won't even start and it seams to be dumping gas into the intake. Plugs looked wet and only got a few backfires out of it.

Can someone help a poor fellow out? I am willing to truck the bike to you (anywhere within about 2 hrs of Washington,PA possible farther )and will bring along my meager tools if need be.

I'd be willing to look at the carbs for you if you can hand them over to me for a bit. Did you install new gaskets and floats, etc? I also can install on the bike and sync it once I am 100% sure the carbs are in good condition. I live in Edgewood around Pgh. PM me for details if you are interested.

That looks like a cool run. I'm originally from Bridgeport Oh, right across the river from Wheeling. If it wasn't 2 hrs there, I'd tag along. That's an extra 120 each way for me.. Have fune, I know those roads are a blast.

Anyone doing the clinic in Ohio this year? My carbs are good, but I was looking for an excuse to ride up to the lake and meet some fellow xj'ers. Or how about an XJ meet/ride?

well, I'm going to be at the zoo with my friend's baby on Saturday, so no go on the carb tune at your place Polock. Too bad, I am going on a long mother's day ride (400 miles) on Sunday. I synced the carbs this week and it is running well, so it should be fine anyway. I would like a second opinion one day though or at least another well-tuned XJ to see if mine is really running well.

Hence my interest in the Ohio Carb clinic actually happening.
