1100 Bobber project

    Anyone know where I can get a service/shop manual for an 82 1100? Would be helpfull in thinning out the wiring and other misc questions.

    Don't quote me on this, but it is my understanding that pretty much all the jap bikes have the same gearing ratio. SO a honda will work on a Yamaha, and a 750 will work on a 650 etc. Some of the Gurus will be along shortly to give you a definite answer, but that has always been my understanding

    650's are right around 2200 rpms for 60 mph. I picked up an old yamaha scooter speedo (small 2" diameter) and it was 2240 rpms for 60mph. not sure if that info helps you out at all. Check the stock gauges, they might say that at the very bottom of the speedo "screen".

    the vast majority of metric (jap) bikes all use the same speedo ratio. so basically any bike speedo will work.

    Yup, I have a speedo from an older Honda CB350 on my Seca now and it's actually more accurate then the stock speedometer was. They are all the same ratio (metrics)

    Thanks guys! Anyone know if the speedo cables are pretty universal or if I should expect any compatibility issues? Just curious.

    Dana, The cable should fit right in. From what I know, they are all exactly alike as far as Japanese bikes are concerned. Is your 1100 tach cable driven? I would like to see more photos of your bike, seems like it's going to be a very nice project for you. I just installed the 03-748 speedo gauge on my xj750RJ SECA and the cable went right in. The only thing is, it takes some time getting used to seeing 60MPH at around 11 O'clock instead off at 1 O'clock on the old gauge. I like the look at lot better, but my old Gauge Box was way uglier than yours.

    I am plannin on doin some more work to it this weekend, I will get some more pics after that and the tach on this bike is electronic. Thanks again!

    Dana, If your tach is electronic... How are you going to mount the 03-732 Tachometer? that tachometer is cable driven... that's why I went with the 03-675 it's smaller than the speedo, but I don't think it looks bad and it's for an electronic type tach. hooks onto your neg. coil wire. Very easy install.

    Anyhow. I can't wait to see more photos.

    Wow, huge oversight on my part. Thanks Xulf, you saved me from buying that! Let the Speedo/tach hunt restart! ;)

    This weekend totally fell apart and I didn't get any more work done on the bike. I have a crazy work schedule, so not sure when i will get back to it this week. I will get more pics up when I get another chance to work on it.

    New pics! Finally some progress! :)

    NOTE - I still have several parts available off this bike:
    Bars/mounts
    rear plate bracket/tool box
    foot pegs
    passenger foot pegs
    Mirrors
    Battery side covers
    Center stand

    Things I will be selling after the build is complete:
    4 into 1 exhaust
    Ignition cluster (after I am finished with the wiring)
    Engine side guards (I will be getting forward controls, can't have them both)

    I need a nice set of stock exhaust to put on it/modify. If anyone has a stock exhaust (or any that come out both sides) that fit an 1100 let me know. Thanks guys!

    Hey guys,
    Just got to thinkin tonight, I see there is a spot for a kick starter on the side of the 1100 engine case. Anyone ever hear of anyone actually installing a kick starter on their 1100? Know where I can get a kit?
    Any info on this would be appreciated, thanks guys!

    Well 2 vacations later, I am back on the bike project. Got most or the framework/welding done, now back home to continue on the wiring. Have made the choice to start fresh and make my own harness. Here is the most recent progress, more to come soon now that I am back on it again.

    very nice, im sure that sucker flies, can imagine hwo much weight you've shaved off. im also glad you kept the origional paint, It looks very nice, I'd match the rear fender to the other paint color. Good work, i like seeing 1100 bobbers, cuz they're huge

    super cool man. wish i had welding skills...i've been banging my head on the desk trying to figure out how to mount my seat. i've been through 3 different seat ideas ranging from cafe (which i now have a perfectly good fiberglass cafe seat sitting in the garage) a 9"in pan seat, a chopped stock seat and i just ordered a seat today that looks a lot like yours. it looks like you mounted the seat bracket directly to the tank where the tank bolt goes into the frame. is this the case? do you have it set up so you can still remove the tank from the frame if need be or do i have to forgo the idea of getting the tank off again? for the rear (springs) there are a couple of options but the new seat is 12-13 inches long which would require me to weld a bar further back in order to accommodate for the length of the seat and the long ass stock tank. mine is a 550 so the frame may be a bit different. i hope im just making a mountain out of a mole here and its not that difficult- but i've been at this for damn near a year. anyway, really cool ride man - these old yamahas just look so cool as dirty old bobbers.
