Looks like my '82 - which I think could only sell for about $1500....maybe $1800 if I found the right buyer....here in BC (like I'd ever sell it again, tho).

$4000! Another case of "Sorry, honey, I couldn't find a buyer...."

Could be a good deal if you are a Bob Jones fan. Or a Tom Jones fan. Or maybe Jenny Jones...

Hey! I know a Bob Jones! He used to own the NAPA store in Forest Grove, OR.

I think I'll have him touch up my '98 F150 V-6 pickup. Should be able to get $35,000 easy!!!

Might have to have ol' Bob paint the valve covers though in order to get full price!

It would be interesting to know what the bike ultimately sells for. Maybe someone could follow up with seller when ad disappears and be the disappointed late buyer.

Isn't there a Bob Jones University? Maybe he's trying to scrape up some tuition!

Clean example but doesn't even have the "cool" of the faux "Midnight Maxim". 2K or less.

    Found Him!

He is dead now, but I guess he was big into the XS1100.

I'm pretty sure Bob Jones is the guy that owned the now-defunct Merriam Cycle here in KC. His local claim-to-fame was as a Yamaha guru, specifically XS1100's. He didn't sell new bikes but he would snatch up any classic UJM (especially an XS1100) that was in decent shape and completely rebuild it. Sometimes to exact stock specs, sometimes better than stock. The reputation was that if you bought one of his bikes, it was as good as new if not better. The downside..... he was quite proud of his work, and it showed in the price. Not defending the price, but that's who Bob Jones is.

Apparently he even wrote a book:

Yep, that's the guy. Bob was an iconoclast and something of a snob, but he was also one of the best Yamaha street bike wrenches who ever lived.
If you think paying four grand for a near-perfect Maxim 650 is outrageous, consider what the same amount of money buys you on the new bike market. Do you really want to ride a Rebel?

If you take labor into account (as any business person has to) then what he was charging for a completely refurbished bike was not excessive.

I would have to get $4000-$4500 for my '83 if I were to recoup the cost of all the parts PLUS my labor. Maybe even more.

And you're absolutely right about what you'll get for $4K in a new bike. How about what you'd get for $2000 or $3000? EXACTLY why I prefer a properly refurbished older bike...

Fitz I'm right with you. I explained to my wife that a new Vmax was 18k-25k 8O and I would ride it just the same as my 1989. The best thing is I get to enjoy my bike for the next few years as I research what I want to do with her and then sweat in as much work as possible leaving the rest to the pros. Once all is said and done, I will have a brand new 1989 customized to my specs for a fraction of the cost of a new one. What I didn't tell her is I plan to use the savings to add to the list of bikes...

that is a little high. I would rather buy a $500 Maxim and drop the other $3500 into doing things myself.

And I'm also from the KC area, down in Gardner and work in OP.

RIGHTEOUS! Haha. Well if I ever see another XJ around I'll yell and you won't hear as you drive by and it will be like we met...almost.
