52 MPG and a lot of fun!

went on a 159 mile ride today through the lakes and hills of south east michigan. from Milford to Mason and back along N. Territorial Road and the Dexter Trail with a stop in Hell for lunch...

6 of us from work rode. of course im the only one on an antique bike. i took the '83 900R today. the others being an 07 CBR1000rr, an 07 FZ6, a pair of 00 zrx1100 kawasakis and a 100th anniversary 1200 sportster. we had a couple of spots of open road that we squeaked the bikes just a TAD OVER the legal posted limit. right around 105-115. the 900 performed flawlessly...

the stop for lunch was at the only bar/restaurant in Hell, Michigan and it was packed with bikers. mostly from the "motor company" but there were a few ricers mixed in...

okay im going to stop yacking before i get flagged for not posting enough 'technical' stuff...

    Hey Dave,

    Sounds great!

I went out for a similar ride (mine being the only 20th century bike) with some friends from work today. About 250 miles up around the mountains and canyons a bit. Got 59 MPG for one 88 mile stretch from Canon City up through Browns Canyon to Buena Vista. That's mostly uphill and at high altitude. Gotta say I'm quite happy with this current tune... the XJ ran really well the whole way through.

    Cheers,
    Paul

Does this mean I finally got it right?

Remember, we went with H rated tires. 130mph max!

I went for a cruise over labor day with a pack of 5, with my bike also being the only 20th century bike. I was with a streetbob 1340, a Sportster, a GSXR 1000, and a late 90's ninja 600. Believe it or not, my little 550 not only out accelerated the sportster, but it made the streetbob 1340 look bad. Who would of thunk it?

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
there arent too many harleys that can out run an XJ. pretty funny when a friend of mine tries to run his road king against me. he has yet to beat me no matter how much he tries to get the jump on me, I catch him in second and blow by him.

These things are amazing. Easily outpace a bike with more than twice its cubic inches. Gotta love XJ's.

    as in one up, yes...

but there were 5 others from work and it was some hills and twisty curvy roadway. the speed was NO WHERE constant...

im sure if i wasnt up and down thru the gears for a large percent of that, id be pretty close to 60mpg. the bike just runs that good...

I am right in the territory that you cruised thru. In fact, we are buying a house in Gregory...just North of Territorial Road and barely 5 miles from Hell. Not only that but on Monday I rode my Victory from Ann Arbor up to Mason to Slick's Motorcycle Salvage to piece together a sissy bar/luggage rack combo for the wife's bike (see my writeup in the modifications forum).

Last night the wife, Mini Goddess (8yo daughter), and I cruised 155 miles up to Birch Run and back (she was on her XJ650Maxim and I on my V92SC Victory). We topped off before and after and she never ran out of gas (but was in Reserve). Gotta love the mpg on these things.

P.S. What's happening in Dexter on Sunday?

A, if i hadnt gone on a ride last sunday i would be. i have a hard time justifying time away from the family with my wife and i on different shifts and never seeing her or doing anything with her (as a family)...

B, i was under the impression its in Stockbridge. not that far from Dexter but still a different local...

C, STOCKBRIDGE is having a big (relatively) bike rally. theres 6 (i think) motorcycle clubs or organizations confirmed. one is the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club. theres a couple of guys on that website (vjmc.com) that will be there with their 900Rs.

D, i would love to go but like i said, i dont think i could justify going. it would take some 2 hours or more to motor there (im 130+ miles away from stockbridge and 116+ miles from dexter) and i could only take the family if i went in a cage which i dont really want to do...

    from another website:
and an early pic or two from last year:

I expect that the wife and I will ride to that bike event in Stockbridge on Sunday. I work 4pm-midnight but will have plenty of time to enjoy the afternoon. We'll be on an 82 XJ650 Maxim and a 2000 Victory V92SC. It would be great to meet up with some of you guys.
