HELP,can not get my shims out;got them out

    G'day all, whilist changing my rocker cover gasket,i thought i would check my valve clearances,& done this when the motor was still warm,the measurments iam not worrying sbout cause i will do them again tomorrow,but when it came down to getting the shim out(as we were following bigfitz,pictoral airhead),& we could not get them to show anysign of coming out,it rotates,but no luck any ideas attached is a couple of pics,

    They won't come out until you have the valve held open using the special tool. There needs to be some room between the shim and cam to remove .

    I used a doubled up ziptie through the spark plug hole to hold them open. i think I found the idea here on xjbikes.

    The photos indicate your bucket isn't being held down far enough to give you the required clearance. You need the tool or do the zip tie (or insulated #12 house wire) trick.

    Also, the cam lobe should be pointing "straight up" (180*) in relation to the surface of the shim.

    I used house wire. You need to turn the crank with a open ended wrench until the valve is open. (You are looking in the spark plug hole) Jam your wire or zip tie in there, turn the crank more and the valve will close on the wire.

    Now, there will be clearance to pry the shims out. I used a flat head screw driver to hold down the outer ring, and a sharp metal pick. (crappy ones from AutoZone) to pop the shim out.

    thank you all for you're help :D 8) ,got them out with a piece of wire. 8)
    all done new shims installed, 8) i was going to polish the rocker cover,but i could see a weeks worth of work to get just right 8O ,so i painted instead, 8)
    i will post pics @ # when i get more time.
