    Does anyone have a list?

The reason I ask, is that I saw some sort of Yamaha (looked like an older Maxim) last night on my way home. Nice looking bike.

I'm going to check it out tonight.

I assume most 1982 Yamahas go for $1200 or less?
Are the prices different between the maxims and SECAs?

PS - Is it sad that I'm looking at another bike already?
Before I've even fixed my first one?

Price depends on your area and just how "proud" the current owner is of the bike. I've seen some around my area range from $500 in rideable shape to $3,000 becaues the owner thinks it's special in some way. Both examples appear to be similat condition from the pictures. So you never know and of course they're only really worth what the next guy will pay.

Price is definitely geography and market-driven. GENERALLY speaking, you don't want to spend more than $500 for a non-runner.
A running bike will usually bring at least $800-$1200 even in raggedy shape; then up to as much as $2500-$3000 depending on the condition.
    (We're still talking XJs here.)
None of these things are quite rare enough (yet) for the price to go above what the bike originally cost, except for the occasional "dealership find" 0 miles bike.
Secas (in good condition) seem to bring a bit more than Maxims, probably because there were fewer of them.
NO, it's not bad to want another one even if the first one isn't finished (but look who's talking.)

I figure my wife wants to ride too.
She's thinking about taking the class next year.

So I could buy the bike, and get it ready for her. Ride it until winter......when I'll work on both bikes.
I think a Maxim would be perfect for her.

On top of that, I love my SECA. The quality, the feel.
Plus, I will have experience with the XJ type bikes. Easier to work on both.

Where do you store all of your bikes? Larger Garage or Storage?

How many miles is too many miles? Even if the bike is in good condition?

I have a one-car garage; but I have a MotoBoy (rolling centerstand platform) and a home-made rolling platform. They allow me to turn the bikes sideways and shove them next to each other in the back of the garage. If it weren't for the rolling platforms, I wouldn't be able to fit them all in.

I'd like another MotoBoy but there's no way to pull that off again (took advantage of EU vs. GBP vs. USD exchange rates back at the first of the year.) Legal Speeding now makes a "low-profile" Park-N-Move, I may invest in one of those.

If you're looking for examples of prices paid,I just got my 83 Midnight Maxim 750 w/15,000 mi,for $550.Seller was asking $700,and $550 was my first what I thought was lowball offer, but he jumped right on it,so I probly could've gotten it even cheaper :( .Looks great for its age, pretty much everything but the tank and front fender had new paint,I still smell it burning off after each ride.Tank and fender paint looks a little bad up close, kinda faded and scratched up.Runs great, tires not too bad.Had to replace clutch cable and back brake, fronts need new pads too,but should get me thru this season  .Got it at a motorcycle swap meet, where I noticed MOST of the bikes were INSANELY cheap, yet nothing seemed to be selling.Normally I'd agree 100% with the replies here about location playing a big part in price,as usually I've noticed over the years that in my neck of the woods (Ohio) both bikes and cars seem to be outrageously high compared to ads I see from other states.I've always guessed this is due to it being so hard to find anything that hasn't rusted into oblivion since they use crazy amounts of salt on the roads, half the time when there hasn't been any snow and won't be till a week later. When the roads are perfectly dry and the weather's good, you constantly see plow trucks dumping salt, with the plow blade throwing so many sparks on the dry road that you'd think it was July 4th 8O .Sorry,I tend to ramble  ,anyway, there's my example

    I bought my 82 XJ550 Maxim for $400.
It ran (ok, 2 cylinders isn't really running)
PO acutally used period correct black duct tape on the seat.
    Paint was crap.
    1 side cover was missing.
Had some of those Cafe style bars on it, not my style.
    Turn signals didn't work.
Wizards convinced me to replace perfectly good looking 27 year old brakes.
A few months, a lot of hours, and about $400 later I have a real nice running pretty decent looking ride.

I got mine for $300 without the carbs on it. PO said he took them off and cleaned them. I say BS. Anyway 15 minutes putting them back on and it started and ran pretty good. Disassembled for paint and proper carb cleaning and now she runs great, plenty of power for me (still newer to riding street) and I ride it just about every chance I get. I brought it to work today. 35 miles down I-95 in DC area traffic.... Bike was great.

I picked Mine up for $450. It was in bad shape. Only fired on two cylinderds, crapy paint, battery side cover missing. Took it to a shop to get a tune up and valve adjustment... $300 latter it didn't run any better. Decided to do all work my self (Cleaned carbs a little electrical work) got it running good and rode it for two seasons and then wouldn't shift out of first. Chain guide disinigrated. Currently waiting for parts to fix it. I think they are great bikes and worth the TLC I'm putting into it.

My wife says, "I can't prevent you from doing what you want with your money, but why in the world would you want another motorcycle?"

    :)

So you have something to ride if the first one is down for repairs. Nobody should have only ONE motorcycle, it just ain't natural.

I'm actually "comfortable" at 3. The fourth one I just bought by accident.

    1. you're wife lets you keep your money?! lucky man.

    2. If we lived closer together I'd think I'm engaged to your wife. My fiance says the same thing.

Well, I went to check it out.

What looked good from the road, did not look so good close up.

    22k miles for $1200
    I think it's a 1982 Yamaha Maxim 650.
The engine looked pretty clean, but the cosmetics were a little rough.

    :(no new bike for me:(

Did it run? I paid $800 for my '81 550; it ran but that was about it. Dumba** PO was actually riding it even though there was brown jelly in the master cylinder and the rear wheel was loose.

Rough cosmetics is no problem; even the most horribly corroded cases can be sanded and buffed back to brilliance.

It's FALL. NOW is the time to find motorcycle bargains, as winter closes in and folks get desperate. I posted up about an absolutely beautiful '83 Nighthawk that was up on CL here in Motown for $600.

I just wish I had a TWO CAR garage... (No car ever lives in the garage, it's reserved for motorcycles.)

    I didn't call the seller.....

I paid $1k for my SECA, and I didn't feel like it was worth $1200. Not even $1k for that matter.

I am definitely going to keep an eye out for another XJ this fall........It would take a great deal for me to buy another bike.

if it ran it was. Remember you have a one-year bike there (in the USA anyway) and if it's solid and complete it's worth more than you might think. Consider the price of a new 600 these days...

It all depends on miles and condition; Secas are rarer and therefore generally worth more than Max's (except maybe the 750.)

Just keep trolling Craig's list and keep your compression tester at the ready.

I'm tempted to offer the guy $800.

I really liked the look of the bike though.
Maybe I'll snag some pics of the bike tomorrow....and see what you guys think.

I gave $1000 for my 83 xj750, runs and drives good. It came with a set of throw over saddle bags. Had to replace rt control, kill switch didn't work. Got one off e-bay for 16.99. From reading on here i think my frt brake master cylinder needs a rebuild.

I just bough my Seca a week ago up north of Menomonee Falls for $800. 11K Mi, original owner. Rode it 130 mi home with no issues, and have already put close to 500 miles on it.

The deals are out there right now, especially in Wi. There was a real nice looking 81 Seca 550 listed in Milwaukee for $850 the same day I picked up my 650.

I paid 200 for my 1100 back in January. It was really rough when I got it. It took till June to get it ready to ride but it was all worth it. It will probably be my favorite even if I do get another bike.

We call it Multiple Bike Syndrome and it is an incurable sickness. I have approximately 60 motorcycles currently but the number fluctuates frequently so that is an estimate. The wifes and significant others will never understand, they just need to accept our sickness. If they cannot accept it, then they are not going to make it in our lives. Rules: 1. I have a remote shop out in back and the wife has never set foot inside it. 2. I have a seperate bank account for my "hobby". Wife is not listed on account. Works great!
