oip pressure guage

was wondering if it was possible to put an oil pressure guage on my bike? (85 xj 700 maxim) i have done this to some of my other bikes before but there has allways been a spot for it. does anyone know of this on a maxim? i have included some pics.....pic of guage, adapter and a pic of a possible spot for this mod. the pic of my bike is the right side with bolt(circled red) dont really know what this bolt is for? anyone with info would be appreciated...........thanks.

There is no way to add an oil pressure gauge to the engine without having an oil cooler and tapping into the hoses since the oil doesn't come out anyplace but everyone should have an oil cooler so it's a good thing to have to add. Don't remove any bolts, they hold the crankcase together. You can cut one of the hoses to the cooler and insert a 'T' and put the sender for the gauge there. I installed VDO electric gauges so I used an 'X' adapter and also installed a temperature sender along with the pressure sender.

 

is it possible to install a oil cooler on my model and if so where would i look for one? what would the cost allso?

 

There are two large hex head plugs on either side of the lower crankcase below the timing cover and the right side cover that can be tapped for a fitting for an oil pressure gauge. This is the main oil gallery. right after the oil cooler. I have purchased a 2" backmount oil pressure gauge and 16V voltmeter to install on my Seca. I am thinking that ther Phillips head screw near the top of the cylinder bank on the right hand side of the engine is ported into the oil circuit, so I might try to install it there. it might be a better place, since it would give you an oil pressure reading just before the cylinder head.

 

Circled red bolt is a crankcase bolt only..

 

See that bolt in side of the block up the top just off center in the pic , [the yics port bolt] , just above that is another smaller bolt [4inches] , thats the camshaft feed oil gallery behind there.

I would be careful of fitting any pressure gauge that can/could be KNOCKED OFF as in "broken or hit" as on the side of the motor.

So if i was "gunna" fit a oip gauge , i would fit a right angle fitting is the cam oil hole , then a hose from there to whereever the gauge will is be mounted safely , don't ferget to bleed the hose [ie: startup with gauge on but the hose a little loose so oil come out removing the air then nip up hose] , and WHALLA .

IT will be dissapointing though as the oil pressure reading might scare one on a real hot day.

 

good suggestion HooNZ i knew that i would be possible i just didnt know where it could be done, i think coming out of the main oil gallery replacing the gallery bolt with a fitting and then running the gauge to were i want would work good also as Macmcmacmac mentioned, thanks all for your suggestions i apreciate it.
