So i managed to pull the shims out to check wich sizes i had in the motor. And this is what i came up with. The smallest blade on my feelers guage is a .005 wich barely fit in either of the intake shims, so i figured that they are .004 wich are on the tight side. (in .004 to .006 ex. .006 to .008)

    #1 in. (.004) with a Y275 shim. replace with Y270

    #1 ex. (.005) with a Y260 shim. replace with Y250

    #2 in. (.004) with a Y270 shim. replace with Y265

    #2 ex. (.006) with a Y260 shim. replace with Y240

    #3 in. (.004) with a Y275 shim. replace with Y270

    #3 ex. (.006) with a Y265 shim. replace with Y245

    #4 in. (.004) with a Y275 shim. replace with Y270

    #4 ex. (.006) with a Y270 shim. replace with Y260

Its my understanding that the shims come in .005 ink, and to get every thing on the loose side, i would need to drop 2 shim sizes.

Am i on the right track, Please advise

No! You have measured your clearances with a fractional feeler blade, and the shim charts, etc. are written in metric sizes.

Here is what you actually have:

    #1 in. (.004" = .1016mm) with a Y275 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y270 shim.

    #1 ex. (.005" = .1271mm) with a Y260 shim. Too tight, replace with Y255 shim.

    #2 in. (.004" = .1016mm) with a Y270 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y265 shim.

    #2 ex. (.006" = .1525mm) with a Y260 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y255 shim.

    #3 in. (.004" = .1016mm) with a Y275 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y270 shim.

    #3 ex. (.006" = .1525mm) with a Y265 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y260 shim.

    #4 in. (.004" = .1016mm) with a Y275 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y270 shim.

    #4 ex. (.006" = .1525mm) with a Y270 shim. Just barely tight. Leave as-is or replace with a Y265 shim.

All of your inakes are just barely tight, as the minimum specification for those is .11mm.

Your #1 exhaust is tight, and you would need to go down one size, to a Y255 (2.55mm thick) shim to get it back within spec.

Your other three exhaust clearances are just barely tight, as the minimum specification for those is .16mm. But it would be a wise move to use a one size smaller shim on each of those

Yo chacal, while checking out the prices for the shims, whats the differents between an OEM shim, or aftermarket shim except for the price. :?: WOW

    The price.

Chacal is absolutely correct on his shim recommendations; I'm going to add a recommendation that you invest in a metric feeler gauge, it makes this much easier. Especially when you consider that if you do the math, .004" is TOO TIGHT (.102mm.)

Fitz, I had to check the valves on a DOHC Honda 750 the other day and I could not find a single metric only feeler guage. It would be great to find one in .1, .2, .3, .4 and then increments of .5 mm but I absolutely couldn't find one so I wound up using an SAE/metric combo set. At least it had the metric equivalent printed on the leaf along with the SAE value. It obviously worked ok but I want a metric only set!

Any idea where to get a metric only feeler guage?

Oh Street, the biggest difference is Len (chacal) v. Yamaha!

Yeah the ones in imperial sizes with odd metric equivalents create some interesting math problems...

The only one I've found is K-D Tools' #2274. They're available pretty much anywhere online that sells tools, even Amazon, and I believe chacal carrries them too.
