There's a plethora of information on adding pods in place of the air box. The short story is that you'll have to open your carbs up, rejet to account for the extra air, and deal with a bunch of pain-in-the-ass tuning issues.

Some will tell you that this isn't the case and it isn't that hard... it's your decision. But the fact remains that the bike wasn't made to run with them and you potentially face some pretty complicated tuning issues. If that is worth not having an airbox to you, then go for it... I don't see the point.

I have to agree with PipeDreams. It seems like a lot of effort for little gain. Having said that I am a fanatic about keeping things I own in original condition wherever possible. I just love the look of an original XJ.

Spend the $80 on improving your brakes, a shop manual, iridium plugs, a Vista Cruise, or other personal improvements.

I concur. Yamaha designers and engineers designed their bikes for the best perfomance possible as far as the engine goes. They tweaked every possible ounce of horsepower out of the powerplant.

Trying to tune a carb that was never designed for a pod is an exercise in futility.

Like TimetoRide says, spend your money on improving other things. Progressive shocks, Barnett clutch, Dyna coils, etc.

The powerplant is pretty badass as it is!

Now, I can not say enough about cleaning those darn carbs, though! A clean carb bank is a happy carb bank!

$8.95 each at your Local dealership. Tell them to look in the Marshall catalog.
