Well I already posted a few pics on here for Q's and A's about how to build this but I want to have an Official build thread. Here is the starting point. an XJ 550 Maxim, pretty good shape, had to get a new battery, chain and sprockets, do a thorough carb cleaning and she ran nice.

No the rear end does not fit, you have to have welding experience, and of coarse a welder, you need to build your own brackets to mount the swing arm. If you have basic welding skills you can do this, but you need to widen the left side frame about an inch to clear the chain off set. Im only at this point so I cant give any more advise. what im hoping to do is just extend the original 550 sprocket out out with an R1 sprocket and not have to build a Jackshaft. The R1 swing arm has alot of adjustability at the swing arm pivot.

Nice bike. From the pics it looks like its really coming along. You are doing basically the same thing I am with my bike but I am using a honda vfr front end and single sided swingarm. Plus mine is a 650 so it was shaft drive. I look forward to seeing some more pics as you progress.

How much offset on the sprocket do you need? I've got an article that shows how to build an offset sprocket, but it can probably only be 2-2.5" of offset. I can scan the article and send it to you if you want.

It would keep you from having to use a jackshaft.

I have an R6 front wheel that matches but it will not fit the Maxim forks, R6 forks are spendy and not in the cards at this time. I will paint the front wheel black though and both will get a red pin stripe.

Looks good. Is that jackshaft going on the swingarm pivot? Is it built onto a swingarm spacer?

Thanx, yes the jackshaft is going on the swingarm pivot. I had it all set but need to move it back about a 1/8-1/4 inch to take slack out of the front chain. no adjustment.

Is the piece you're welding the sprockets to going to double as a spacer? If so will it still be able to spin freely once the swingarm pivot is torqued down?

No, Im using the original swingarm pivot for the jackshaft and welding on a new pivot for the new swingarm. I'll try and get some more pics tonight.

Replace it. There isn't much chain there to stretch, the other thing is being that its so short it may wear faster.

OK camera was the same as my old one. Anyway this is a lot harder than I thought it would be, I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you want to pull your hair out. I'm no bike builder or designer by any means, made many mistakes and I'm sure I'll make many more.

Not sure that I'll even get it done before the snow flies, just haven't had time.

Are you still planning on adapting the R1 front end?

I seldom comment on these customized bikes but this is pretty unique. Especially the shape of the seat. I think you're on to something here but I would like to know why you mounted the seat backwards?

In my opinion if the seat was spun around front to back then Huey, Dewey and Louie would have room to swing in the wind. Excellent engineering concept 550!

Actually the seat is on frontwards, (See pic) as strange as it looks. I wanted something different, I still got a ways to go but the general Idea is there
