Check out this link that another member sent me. It explains in detail how to adjust the valve shims. I found it extremely usefull as I am a beginner with bike mechanics. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14827.html

The special tool you will need can be bought from chacal.

I have a problem, before I adjusted the screws I decided to check for air leaks, and low and behold the idle surged some where in the middle of my carbs. Now these carbs have been stripped down by me and rebuilt with new throttle shaft seals + used silicone grease.
So at the moment the carbs are in pieces and being inspected by me for problems with the seals. These seals are new from Chacal.

    Any advice would be appreciated?

if you used a unlit torch to check for leaks, remember the gas can blow around, maybe to the rubber intake tubes, also notice what condition the rubber caps on the choke plungers are in

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
Polock is right on this... just to add a bit

typically, these rubber intakes crack over time. best bet is to get some clear or black RTV and fill in the cracks... even if they dont look like they are completely cracked through, they can and will.
do it while the carbs are off the bike.

    I used carb cleaner

You might be on to something the caps on the plungers are split where someone, not me has put them on and on the underneath forced it and some are buckled some have split.

I didnt realise how important these caps are!!.

    I will order from Chacal.

Thanks, you might have saved the day!
