How do I remove back wheel?

    I have an '81 XJ750 seca and I need to remove the back wheel. Any pointers? It's got a flat tire on the side of the road and I plan on doing everything by hand. Any help would be appreciated ASAP- thanks.

    I am pretty sure that is shaft drive, so....

    disconnect the rear brake from the drum by loosening the 10mm bolt... flat screwdriver to open it up a bit and slide it off.. let it dangle.
    support bar at the bottom of the drum... remove the nut and push it down... get it out of the way as well.
    loosen the axle clamp nut on the right side and use the screwdriver to open it up a little.
    on the left side, pull the cotter pin, remove the nut and then use a small screwdriver on the right side in the hole to twist and pull at the same time
    pull the wheel towards you on the right side and the wheel will come off the teeth.
    some models might need the license plate removed.. your mileage may vary on that.

    reverse to put it back together... be sure to lube everything up before you put it back together...

    also, check the rear brakes for wear and delamination while you are in there.

    Hilarious guys. Yes it's shaft driven.........and how well does the stand on these bikes work for pulling the rear tire?? I'm changing it out first thing tomorrow morning as the last XJ I owned was stolen twice. Thanks all!

    the stand is perfect for it
    it's a tight fit pulling the tire as you will find, but not too bad overall.
    I actually had mine in gear that way you can line up the wheel to the axle easier... kinda like a spin and push.
    just get the tire in position and put the axle bolt through and use that as your guide... spin and push and it will go right in place.
    there are torque specs for the wheel, but dont remember them off the top of my head. I know it is posted on here.

    Pull the valve core?

    Since you are going to dismount the tire might be a good time to replace the valve stem with a steel unit. Much more durable than a rubber one.

    Wow, that was easy. I had to break the cotter pin just to get the axle bolt out. Metal valve installed and new tire and change all for $50. That new tread is a little slick though. Thanks for all the help- you guys are the best! :wink:

    dont overdo it on tread for a few miles till that slickness wears off.
