Thinking of replacing the mufflers on my XJ700, my question is...
If I buy some Harley take-offs from ebay, how do I know which ones will fit?

Yes...Im a rookie when it comes to working on bikes - but I'm trying to learn.

    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.
    Ron.

Buy what you feel looks great, at the right price, then, if they don't fit, take them to a muffler shop to have new inlets welded on of the right diameter. Then you just have to drill a hole in the hanger bracket to match your bike. A little bit of black paint hides the weld.

    Thanks.
I mainly want to replace them so that I can keep the original ones for future use, especially since they are very hard to find!

Also, is there any certain kind I should look for?
How much (if any) will the affect the sound?...
I really like the way my bike sounds when accelerating or passing!

If your header pipes are 1-1/4" outside diameter, the HD mufflers will bolt on just fine (stock sportster mufflers) The sound is pretty much like the stock mufflers, maybe a little more growl to them (I never had stock mufflers on mine since I've owned it, so I can really say if they are louder or not. All I DO know is they sound good enough for me. Not annoying like other mufflers I've tried.

I've read that you have to rejet your carbs if you go this route. I've personally replaced my mufflers with Sportster slip ons. They fit very well but we had to fabricate a bar underneath to make sure the centre stand wouldn't come up and hit the pipes.

Yes, the center stand will hit the muffler. I used a piece of 1" flat stock bent into an L-shape with a piece of rubber glued to the bottom for the center stand to sit up against. The rubber keeps it from "banging" when it flips up. Painted it black and you don't even see it down there.

My bike has plenty of power and speed for me.
    0-60 in around 4 seconds.
She Redlines at 9500, but likes to cruise at 6000-6500.
At those rpms she has plenty of response for passing vehicles.

Been thinking about picking up a touring bike around 1100 cc for long road trips cross country....
(planning on riding from Wisconsin to Arizona next summer)

I bought a set of slip on's from e-bay. They were listed as coming off of a 99 sportster 883 hugger. Inside diminsion was 1 3/4 my collector outside diminsion was 1 1/2. i went to Autozone and bought 2 adapters and was able to adapt that way. the pipes came with brackets and i made straps to connect those to my original mounting locations. will take photo's and add here.
