Well, as the proud owner of a 82 xj550 maxim with some 35K on it I promised myself I would never buy another old bike.

Then an 82 SECA 750 with 2800 miles popped up on Craigslist. So I bought it.

EVERYTHING is like the way it was back in 1982. Original tires, non cracked carb boots, and complete tool kit that looks unused. Even the fuse box is flawless. Its like the bike went through a time warp. What a difference between this bike and my 550. Almost no corrosion.

Anyway I've noticed some major differences between the maxim and the SECA.

The 550 Maxim has way sexier carbs than the 750
The maxim also has a significantly wider rear tire. It makes the SECA rear wheel look wimpy. After some measurements and reading the rim dimensions the maxim wheel is smaller and wider. Which brings me to my first question.

Before I buy new tires for this bike is anyone running a wider and smaller maxim rear wheel on their seca? Will a shaft drive maxim wheel be plug and play? I don't really want to make any significant changes to this bike.

Forks probably need some fresh fluid and definitely some new seals because the old ones are cracking. Should I update the springs with progressives?

Here are a couple pictures I took with my phone
*going to have to work on posting pics, they didnt attach for some reason*

I had a 16" Maxim rear wheel on my 750 Seca for a while. Yeah, it's a 130 instead of a 120, but you do lose some top end, and I'd rather have that. It is possible to squeeze some 130 tires on an 18" Seca wheel, but you have to be careful about clearance.

Also, unless the bike has been stored in a vacuum or an oxygen-free chamber, your fuse box is not flawless. It only _looks_ flawless.

The rubber seals you're seeing on the forks are just dust seals. The oil seals are below them, and may still be ok. They will leave an oily ring on the inner tube if they're bad.

Congrats! It sounds like a great find.

Well that's good to know about the fork seals. So maybe I can just get away with a drain and refill for now.

Currently running Kenda Challengers on my other bike and they have been unnerving on some hard turns so I would like something slightly better. I'm looking at some bridgestone spitfire tires. Can't find anything bad said about them.

    Any other suggestions?

    130 X 18 Kenda Challenger fits a seca 750 with almost 1/4 inch clearance
if you decide to go that way
    Kenda Challenger
    130/90 18 ...5.24 inches
    130/90 16....5.53 inches
    i don't have a 16 or 18 spitfire but a
    130/90 17 is 5.32 on a 2.75 rim

Those numbers don't sound bad Polock. I'm a little concerned about the "bubble effect" of running a tire that wide on such a narrow rim. But it appears no one is having a problem with it. Anyway if I get a chance I'm going to see what my local motorcycle junk yard has to offer for a rear wheel. And if not, I intend on going with a 130/90 18 for the stock wheel.

Sorry Bushy I'd rather not say what I paid for the bike.
