Can anyone tell me how/where I can go to learn about getting rid of the air box and replacing it with air pods (think that's what they're called). I saw them, they looked cool...what's the performance enhancement? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

As they say here...Prepare to enter the seventh circle of hell.
Dont bother,if u want more HP go get a biker bike. otherwise be prepared to do engineering guesswork and MANY trial and errors to get you carbs just right........enter the 7th circle of hell.
Puttin em on is what i wnated to even spent the dough to get em, and got all happy and ready to do it then the EXPERTS stepped in and purdy much discouraged that idea with some really good advice.
If you are persistent then search the forum for PODS,carbs, and "the church of clean" Trust me unless u like payin for dynamometer time and disassembling your carbs repeatedly dont bother.

I have pods on my bike, that one of the PO's put on, not sure what they went through, but it runs fine, is not lean (at least according to doing several plug chops), and has gone many 1000's of miles since they were on (they look like they have been on for many years). I know that sometimes it can cause issues, but it does not always give issues.

Take the time to remove the Airbox and Rubber Boots 'n save 'em!
Even if you have to go through the trouble of pulling-off the Head Pipes and unbolting the Motor Mounts to get room to slide the Airbox out.

Put the Airbox, Fasteners and Boots all in a box and keep it it a warm dry place.

There may come a time when your disenchantment with the Pods will prompt you to want to restore the Bike to a condition where it can be tuned-up and fun to ride, again.

Oh, you can't argue about how cool Pods look.

You can run out of breath and fall-down on your face arguing about any gains you should expect.

All you have to do is rejet ,rejet, rejet, rejet, rejet, ... until you are able to remove the Carbs ... blindfolded with one hand tied behind your back!

Got the dyna jet kit, stored up til i get the stock settup perfect theni will mod after. no sense in going deepr in the hole until then. Stock setup anyway, got pods too,but what good are pods on a stock exhaust?
Got my first set o carbs to the bare bones, after this adventure(and more confidence comes with success) then i may venture into mod land and get all happy and WILD with excitement. For the experienced M/C mech this is nothing maybe but for noobs it is a ride into the Wonderland of befuddlement

If you are going to go to pods, there was a link to show how to remove the air box without damaging anything. I have tried searching but was unable to locate it. It meant removing the carbs and the intake manifolds and I think the battery and mounting for the battery and then just turning it to the right position to work it out or in for reinstallation. Looked relatively easy. Maybe someone can locate or knows the link.

I've loved my pods for 5 years now. No performance problems at all. Spark plugs are nice and tan, fires right up every time and runs like a bat outta hell. Wanna race?

small individual air filters that clamp to each carb instead of having boots feeding from the airbox.

This addresses my question. Where would you start when adding a header/exhaust AND pods. Is there a website or something, or should you contact the header manufacturer.

The only real authorities on Tuning for Pods and Headers are: Helen Waite and Donna DeRhode.

When you ask a busy tech a question about tuning for Pods, he tells you to: "Go to Helen Waite"

Where can I get tuned for Pods and Header?
    "Not here. Try Donna DeRhode"!

My Seca 750 came with a 4 - 1 Mac and pods, and 118 jets (down from 120) According to Chacal's formula, 124's would be better.
Or at least the place to start fine-tuning.
Hope that answers the new Kevin's Q

For the old Kevin- - ever think that since a 650 Maxim has a milder cam, that your experience with pods might not apply to 750's as well?
And that you're giving this "no prob with pods" advice to everybody?
Just seeing if you podded any other XJ.

(and I removed my engine and installed an airbox)

I don't think it's fair for anyone to flat-out make a recommendation to a newbee saying that "Converting to Pods will increase performance."

I think that we should adopt a disclaimer that serves as a caution and a warning to those thinking about converting to Pods.

"Converting to Pods changed the Intake characteristics on an otherwise restricted air intake system.
Depending on the Condition of your Engine the Pods might to have the Carbs re-Jetted for a change to a Lean condition and there is the possibility that they will not be able to provide accurate tuning throughout the Power Band.

    A disclaimer is needed.
Like the do for medicines advertised on TV.
