This is more of a hello and a few questions about the XJs.

I am from London but can't seem to find an XJ forum around here, member of the londonbikers.com

I have been looking to get myself a cheap commute bike to do around 25 miles a day, something I could use all year round and ended up looking at an XJ 1998 600 N. I am actually going today to see it and if everything is good I will get it.

Apparently it only has 2900 miles... yep under 3k not sure if this is bad or good:)

The next thing is that the bike seems quiet old school:) and I wanted to know if it is possible to change stuff on it. The main things I would like to change are: the front light, would like a more streetfighter looking or dual round one instead of the big round one. The dual exhausts... with something a little more ooomphy:) no idea how these sound... but I would like something nice and deep. I would also like a belly pan to protect the pips, specially in London, rain and salt... and last would be the display speedos and co, can the dysplay even be changed for something else? again maybe a digital one or not worth it? looks round and nice like teh bandits.

I have attached a photo of the bike. Also anything that I might need to watch out or check for?

I actually decided to get it, used PayPal for the transaction as I have some nice offers on my credit card.

Bike looked really clean, no rust or anything, just a bit of a rusty chain...

So bike has 2900 miles at £1000 from 1998, could have probably got it cheaper but didn't wanted to risk it as it had a buy now at £1k and starting £750. So price in USD should be $1570.

Will go pick it up this week sometime.

Congrats... you won't see too many seca 2 owners on this site. We're all mostly from the 81-84 era it seems. Surely, the site will still be of much help to you. Enjoy your new ride!

I'm no expert but these are reckoned to be reliable bikes with a lot of fans.
Check all the obvious things, especially those that the owner promises are good (Mine was supposed to come with 4 months tax, which I couldnt see as it was hammering with rain. When the disc dried out - only 2 months left!)
    Tax
    MOT
    Chain
    Forkseals
Reg document (Loads of ebay bikes are "Lost". U can get another but it costs £50 I think)

Ask the seller if u can Ride it away - if he says yes - and you turn up and you can't - haggle.
When I was looking for a bike the only negative comment I read was that the 600 doesnt like short journeys (in the winter) as it doesnt heat up properly, which turns the oil to "Mayonaise"!

That's probably true of all air-cooled bikes though.

Is it parked outside the kebab shop?!!

lol yeah seems to be where the bloke is working, looks like short journeys were on the meu (by the way the palce is a tattoo parlor http://thetattooparlour.net/index.html) should ask him if he can sort me out with one for free :). The paperwork looks OK. Did a vehicle check and came up fine.

The bike is reatty much paid for I just have to go pick it up, hope nothing will go wrong as I didn't really took it out for a ride. My 25 miles a day should keep the engine happy, maybe I can use some of that wonder oil thing that's suppsoed to reduce friction and damage to bits.

Will post more pics when I get it.

Next thing is to try get a basic alarm fitted on it and maybe some heated grips. Would like to convert the front light to something a little nicer and will need a belly pan also to protect the pipes from salt and crap on road.
