Hello, I'm new XJ owner and new to the forum.

    I own a 1986 Maxim XJ700, currently having a couple problems.

I've been noticing that when I give the bike gas, it stays reved up after I release the throttle. Sometimes it slowly returns to idle, but other times it stays reved up and I have to use the kill switch in order to stop it.

I took a look at the throttle cable that connects to the carbs. and it doesn't seem like its stuck, but I don't know what else could be the cause to keep the engine reving. Any ideas?

Also, I've noticed after I start the bike that my hand brake is pulling to much power from the bike. When I pull in the hand brake my neutral light dims, head light dims, and engine rpm's decrease and sometimes kill the bike. Could it be a bad groud or battery.

    Any advice would be greatful,

    Thanks

Push the throttle linkage down with a screwdriver to make sure it is fully closed, if the revs stay high then the slides are holding open & need cleaned. Getting unwanted air in the system can also cause the revs to stay high.

    Welcome to you Hawks!
I'd look at what Wizard mentioned but I'd also look at the cluster and the cable. Do you have a Ventur-Cruise on the bike? I've had the clamps get sticky on me with age and bind the throttle and no amount of cleaning did any good (I have no idea why to this day). Bike ran great once the cruise control was removed. The other issue could be the cable routing and/or crud in the cable sheath. Pull the cable, clean and lube it, then re-install it according to the manual's diagram.
The alternator on these bikes does not supply charging to the electrical system until you reach about 2500 rpms so it is normal to notice this dimming with the use of the brake. This is because you are placing more load upon the battery and it is sucking more current. It could be that your battery is on it's last legs. You need to do a load test on it and see how it stacks up. A fresh battery might be just the ticket to fixing this and eliminating the bike dying on you.

    Slack the Cable Adjuster
    Check operation
Remove cable from Carb Bracket allowing Linkage to fully close.
    Lift Cable to rev Engine

If the Problem persists after ruling-out Cable and Linkage
Remove the Diaphragm Assys and scrub and polish bores.
    Check for air leaks.

Thanks for the ideas. I worked on it a little bit today but im going to remove the gas tank tomorrow so I can get at it better. After I find some diagram to go off of.

The bike does not have cruise.
