    ed...

Just curious if anybody has any idea what would cause this.

Bike sat for a week and did not start. When to check for spark by removing right outer plug wire (brake handle side) and used a nail in the plug boot to ground it to the plug. Started...

Put plug boot back on no start?

Did this a few times then it work fine. Starts first shot.

This has happened a few times already and I want to get to the bottom of it.

    Any help appreciated...

    Thanks

Sounds like you've got a bad plug in that cylinder. This ignition system requires current to flow through both plug wires on each coil in order for both plugs on the coil to fire. If you have a bad plug that's not firing, it will also keep the other one on its coil from firing, and at that point you're trying to start the engine with only two cylinders. By grounding the one boot, you gave it three cylinders instead.

Already tried changing all plugs so they are new.

Could it be the plug wires or coil? Starts fine now, seems to only happen when sitting for a week or so.

Have you cleaned the plug caps (air blow) n dielectric grease them..moisture may settle in them when they sit for a week and cause this situation..also check for the ground wire..clean it (sanding)n put it back on..I had a bad ground wire this season and took me 3 days of figuring out. good luck

make sure the plug caps are firmly screwed onto the wires on both cylinders of the troublesome coil. You might want to check all 4.

Carefully clean off the outside of both coils and check for hairline cracks; they do occur and although they usually start causing issues in the wet, based on your location the frosty mornings could be contributing.
