I'm using the Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle oil in my '82. I like the high heat handling of these oils. I switched from Castrol GTX after seeing the 300+ degree oil temps I was hitting on the dyno.

Just shy of 3 quarts. Look at the glass window near your right ankle.
Overfill a little to see a small bubble at the top. That way, you can see if your carbs spew gas into your crank case. The small bubble goes away.

I would recommend Castrol 20W50 4T. It is specially formulated for motorcycles and is readily available. I use it in my Maxim and in my water cooled K1200LT Beemer as it meets all the requirements for both bikes.

There is much comment about using automotive oils but they don't meet BMW's or Yamaha's API designations.

Just try to find a oil with good Zinc in it. Oils nowdays really lack the stuff, and our old school cams in older engines have really felt the effects of the new emission regulations. Rotella is my prefered choice has around 1200 ppm very good compared to some other shelf oils.

In everything I have or owned got Castrol 20W~50.

Never had a Clutch, Gear, Starter Clutch or Chain Guide problem.

It's rated as a Racing Oil and the XJ-Engine deserves Racing Oil.

I know this sounds odd, mainly cause i don't know what the brand is a knock off of... But I have always used 20/50 Wal-Mart oil. I have never had a single problem with it on my Maxim 650, and I ride probably about 300+ miles a week rain or shine. Plus its the cheapest oil around.

I have also used the same oil in my '69 VW bug, and my old '86 Honda Rebel.

And if you don't like wal-mart, you can generally enter through the side door where the lube tech area is (the only time I ever go there is for oil haha)

Also for completely unrelated to XJ laughs, go to www.peopleofwalmart.com
