I have a 1980 xj maxim 650 that I would be willing to pay someone to fix. It's having electrical issues that I don't have the will to fix. I am going to school and have way to many projects so I just don't have the time. I've tried but it's hard working quiet enough to keep the neighbors happy at 2am.
It's not getting spark. At this point I want it to give me some spark before I rebuild the carbs.
I'm located in 98604. Pm me if you are interested.

    Me too.

Wanna deliver it to Michigan? Looks like there'd be a price war. Might get a good deal.

On saturday october 31st I will be taking it to a shop. I just wanted to give my fellow xjers the chance to make a little scratch instead of giving my money to some harley loving yamaha hating shop. I'll give this some daily bumps.

Before you do that, if you have a spare TCI... you do carry a spare TCI, right? swap it out.

If that don't fix it, measure the resistance from the pickup coils. They should be in the 680ohm range.

It is the wire plugged into the bottom of the TCI It has an orange, grey, black and black stripe wire in it.

Measure from the orange to the solid black wire. Should be somewhere close to 680ohms.

Measure from the grey wire to the solid black wire, it should be the same.

If not, then the pickup coils are dead, and she will never fire.

There is one on ebay for $129, NOS.

It will take you about 2 hours to replace that pickup coil.

If that fixes it, you will be very proud of yourself! So will we!!

I have a spare set of pick ups, but the old ones ohm out just fine, as do the coils and I've put 2 "working" TCI units on it. I've been granted a space in my buddys heated shop :) to work on it so I will be replacing the pick ups and making a new harness for it over the next week or two as time allows. I will keep you updated in my old thread, "I thought I was an ok mechanic untill...".
Once the electric is done I gotta do the carbs *sigh*, at least I know how to do that.

    Ha! I hear ya!

Lemme throw out a dumb question...

Did you go through all the connectors inside the headlight bucket?

Maybe one is loose, or disconnected? That might keep spark from happening! I am just trying to think of every possibility of how the circuit flows, and how it can be interrupted.

Well, ... if you are still stuck and need the Carbs Cleaned and the Bike Tuned at the end of January or Mid February ...

I'll come down, from Boston, and do the whole job for free.
All you need is to take care of my travel, room and board.

It ought to take me only about three weeks.
