I need a new muffler

Well not really.

I have, I think a MAC 4 into 1 and it’s a little loud at WOT for my 62 yr old ears.
I have a couple of question and a comment.

First I like 4 into 1’s.

If this is a MAC can I repack the muffler?
One of the PO's dropped it and I can't get the baffle out.

If not has anyone found a good quiet (not too quiet) universal muffler?

It looks like I could cut (see attached pic) and use a SupperTrapp, looks like there are 2 that will work
SupperTrapp’s aren’t my favorite.

I know that on the 4-2 you can use 02/before sporster mufflers. May be some thing for you to check into.

 

Maybe an automotive glass pack muffler,such as a Cherry Bomb or Purple Hornie? You can usually find them on ebay for about $25 shipped.

 

That looks just like mine on my 750. I rolled "stucco mesh screen" and fiberglass mat around a broomstick and put this muffler core in, then did it again, wrapping the baffle section. It was very quiet, it has unpacked itself a little now.

You have nothing to lose by forcing it apart and trying to pack it, even if you pack it with stainless scrubbees. You can save money and make it as quiet as you like.

Thanks TIMEtoRIDE back in the day I repacked the baffles for my expansion chambers all the time :idea: .

I’m on my way to the hardware store to buy a piece of 1” or maybe 11/2” conduit and some insulation.
I think I’ll start with a 4” long piece with as many holes in it as I can drill, inserted in the inlet side.

I have a complete stock chrome exhaust system off of an 82 650. pm if interested.

 

you are going to pack the front end without taking apart the back ??

Take the maximum lift of a single exhaust valve.
Multiply that by the diameter of the valve.
That is the square area of the exhaust.
Nobody would restrict the exhaust to just that area.
So just double it. (<<that's the real secret)
But you need a volume into which the exhaust can breathe before this restriction.

If you think about the volume before restriction on the stock system, it is huge !! It involves the collector chamber and the 4 header pipes, plus the front of the mufflers. The aftermarket exhausts actually offer a smaller first chamber, but a less restrictive muffler.

For example, on a Kerker exhaust, there is a venturi (2 funnels) so small that you can't put your thumb thru the hole. A 900 easily breathes thru that size, then on to the fiberglass packed area.
