Hello all I am new to the site and motorcycles in general. I got an 1982 Maxim 400 parts bike off of craigslist and have decided to rebuilt her. As far as I can tell, and remeber this is mty first bike, all I need is Carbs, exhaust, hand controls, and side covers. The hardest part is I live in the central fraser valley and can't seem to find parts anywhere. Dose any one have an interchange for these parts at all?

Welcome to the site! I found this site earlier this year when I bought a XJ550 that needed a complete rebuild. There are ALOT of very helpful people here that really know these bikes.

And for parts, Chacal has them! check out his section: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewforum/f=23.html

    Welcome to the site !!
First, did you get a clean title? You will need to keep an eye on the E-Bay crawler at the bottom of the home page. Eventually your pats will turn up.

The Seca400 parts will work, except the side covers.
Don't buy carbs from any other bike.
You can modify and fit mufflers from almost anything you want.
Your bars are 7/8 inch, meaning you COULD buy any 7/8 handlebar levers, grips, and switch assemblies, but then you would have to sort out the wires.
    Easier to stay stock.

The carbs are Mikuni BS34's, so another set of them may work fine, after you replace the jets with the proper ones...

Side covers... E-bay, NOTE.. Many bikes are missing the right sode one...
    I had to make one...

Exhaust, and controls... Mikes XS.com will get you running
E-Bay or Mikes XS (though none of the contrls on Mikes has the choke cable mount, will need to mod something if you go that route.

Thanks for the advice. I assumed that some parts would be interchangable but your timbit on the carbs just saved me a 150 bucks. The title isn't going to be that hard to get actually.

The bike is carb less. I had the day off today so I spend some time taking a closer look at the bike. It seems that not only is it missing the hand contorls but the harness for them has been cut also. I am thinking because the last know date this bike was on the road was April 1995 I am going to rebuild the motor. I pulled the plugs out today and they are clean. I put the bike into 1st and pushed the bike so the motor is free and turning. Does anyone have a good wiring diagram for these things?

You should probably look into buying the xj cd if you want to find wiring diagrams and such. Heres the link for the forum post for the xj cd.

Welcome to the site. Hope you get it running cause these bikes are a whole lot of fun.

Splitshft- - if the engine turns freely, and you can find all 5 gears, you don't do a rebuild. Get a fresh battery, or jumper cables from a car to power-up the bike. Cross the large terminals on the solenoid with a 1/2 inch box end wrench. Run a compression test dry, then repeat with a teaspoon of oil in the plug holes.- - post your results here.
    (check oil in crankcase first)

If you got an hour to kill, check your valve clearances too.

Oh okay I thought because the bike was sitting for so long that the seals would no longer be good. I will try this on the week end. How would I go about checking the valve clearances?

You can rent a compression tester, but you can buy some feeler gauges from an auto parts store. Might as well get the metric ones and save yourself the trouble of converting all the measurements.

You need to make sure your clearances are not tighter than the minimum.

    Here's some info
