I was wondering? As long as the 2 bikes are close to the same production year, do seca and maxim tanks swap out? I know the side covers wouldn't line up and there might be a problem with the seat. Has anyone done this or know of someone who has done this? Thanks...

The tank and seat would need to be swapped - basically every cosmetic part on the bike needs to be changed - otherwise they don't line up. The seca seat is completely different.

It's not about the year, but the size. 750 and 650 Maxim and Seca all interchange. I think 550 M & S swap, but not with the larger bikes.
    900 tank is longer.
Without the cover, the 750 Seca tank has a rather ugly bottom edge with a mounting hole.

Thanks, my friends. The cosmetic parts and seats won't matter. Both bikes will be changed up...

So i think we ran into an issue with the swap.
Skillet's tank( off a 81 xj750 seca) has a sender unit in the bottom were as mine (off a 81 xj650 maxim) does not have this unit

Skillet will just have to go by his odometer and fill up before he runs out of gas and or check his tank by sight when he's low. That's why we have reserve on the petcock as well. As soon as you feel the sputter, place it on reserve and you're good to go for another 20 miles or more.

I don't use my gauge on my 750 tank, since I swaped my gauges.

This, I notice the gauge isn't greatly reliable anyways. switching to reserve will get you 40 miles.

ha, well there you have it. You should have seen my face when I first ran out of gas (or so I thought) 1/4 mile away from a gas station and the gas station did not take a debit card. Luckily I found a $5 bill in my wallet, paid the man at the service station. Then I learned from a friend about the petcock positioning. I never knew it could take you 40 miles though. I reset my trip odometer on my bike everytime I fill up now. and make sure I fill up at around 200 miles or so. It's no big deal really, and when in doubt I just look inside the tank. it's not like trying to look inside the tank of a car LOL. Any more photos since the tank placement?

Thanks for all the help, my friends!! I was sitting at the computer last night thinking about changing over to a round head light and removing the fish finder gauges and this huge blinding light bulb came on over my head 8O . It was this transforming ephiany "WHY DO YOU NEED A GOSHDARNED SENDING UNIT IF YOU DON'T HAVE A GAUGE!" After resting from all the dancing around and unnatural sounds I was making I realized something and said to myself "Self, if your IQ dropped a couple of points, you'd be a fence post." It's not considered talking to one's self if no one hears you. Right?....Right?....Come on, work with me here people!!! It was so simple! Like the old saying, couldn't see the forest for the trees You'll have to excuse me now, I'm going off for some well deserved self-inflicted corpral punishment  ...

650 and 550 Seca tanks will interchange but the 650 tank is longer because it holds 4 more litres, which means a seat change etc etc

if that's the case, then the 750 tank will swap and or fit in place of the 550 tank and vise versa. Do you have a photo of that swap? I personally like the apperance of the 550 tank better than that of the 750 (I'm talking seca here) I know it would hold less gas, but I would like a 550 tank either way for looks.

A 550 Seca tank on a 750 Seca would require some way to make up the almost 4" gap between the back of the tank and the front of the seat. The 550s tank is considerably shorter than the 750s, and a lot "flatter" along the bottom.

I have both 550 and 650 Secas and the 650's tank is easily 4" longer if not more.

But will it mount? I am assuming the obvious, I would have to make a new bracket to lock the tank in place at the rear. I have an aftermarket seat and canalways move that forward. Would the mounting points on the tunnel mount right up?

19 litres for the 650 tank compared to 15 for the 550, the 650 tank bolts straight onto the 550 mount though

This is a 650 tank on one of my 550, obviously it wont fit with the stock seat though and the 650 seat doesn't go straight on

oh yeah the black sidecover you can see is carbon fibre
