when I first start up my bike it has a cracking sound like something is rattling under the bike. would rust in the collector make this noise? It goes away when it warms up.

Funny you should ask. I just got finished chasing the noise down.

The collector has 4 baffle plates that direct and crossflow the gases from each pipe into the correct muffler.

On the bottom and top of the collector at each entry port is a metal mesh screen with multiple layers. This acts to quiet and break up the exhaust gas flow. The screens rusts and then starts to break away in layers. About 7 layers. The exhaust makes them flap and "rattle" against the collector.

The screens do not come out as far as I can tell and they are not accessible to repair. You might stick some JB Weld in the screen to hold them in place. But because they are rusty, the JB may not hold for long.

I replaced the entire system. (Most other collectors are equally used as mine!) Hope that helps.

eBay. Launch the site's eBay list; change the view to "newly listed" then down at the bottom click on "view additional items from eBay stores" and start looking. Do this every four days for a month or so, going back only until you run into stuff you already looked at, and I'll bet you find one for less than you might think.

$75 for the whole system is a pretty good price. I was getting picky because everything I saw was dinged up...therefore I bought the MAC cuz it has no dings in the chrome. However, if you only need the collector...

I posted a question about exhaust selection and got a response with picture. Check the link below, the collector looks really good. If the does not work then the topic was "exhaust selection question" and the author was gregu.
