So I've been reading about a lot of people using mufflers from a Harley Sportster but I have a question about that. What year do people use? I have a 1980 XJ650 Maxim and was considering this but don't know which ones to look for. Also if the stock ones will work would an aftermarket set work as well, say bassani maybe?

some years have crossover tube ports on them, i would try to get a set without those, but i had them and plugged the ports with a freeze out plug tack welded in place.

I got sportser on mine and they did not have crossovers. The year was 2006. I believe that sportsers had crossovers before the mufflers so many years will fit. Also you can find alot on craiglist and ebay. I got mine for $20 in excellant condition.

vince1230, so how do you like the sound?
i was thinking of trying screaming eagles or hard chrome
    staights.
i hated the sound of the stock xj700n mufflers so i
drilled five 3/4" holes in the back plate which helped but
now it sounds like a crotch rocket, not a cruiser.

The PO gave me Sportster mufflers when I bought the bike. I don't know what year they were off of, but they had crossover openings on the side. I pulled the little insulation ring out of them and took them to Napa auto parts and bought freeze plugs (like for an engine block) to hammer into the holes. If I recall correctly, they were right around an inch in diameter, but they can measure there.

Over 2,000 miles later they are still sealed just fine. I can try to post up some pics when I get home if you'd like.

I would personally love to see those pics. I have a set of Sporty mufflers I can't give away, maybe I'd strap em' on for a while just for fun.

Picked up a complete Harley exhaust system on an auction for $10, looked like new. Local Harley guy said the new Harleys get them taken off and thrown out since Harley riders don't believe in mufflers.

Harley's website sells just the mufflers (or probably doesn't) for about $360 each.

I got a pair off an FLH from ebay $30. Once I get the reducer welded to my collector I'll post the video with sound. I'm only using 1 currently as my bike has a 4-1 on it.

i just found a pair in PA off a sportster. I want to know if i understand correctly before i buy these. I can just chop off my old ones at the pipe, and weld these on? Nothing else?

Also, is there much of a difference between back pressure with the sportster mufflers? would i need to rejet?

If the inlets are the same as your collector/pipe then yes. On mine with the 4-1 it required a reducer to get to the 1.75 inlet on the mufflers I bought. I did not rejet and she seems to run fine. I'll get her out for a long ride tonight if the headlight comes on.

Rode to work this morning (40 miles big slab) and the new muffler was nice. It's also quieter than the previous one. Sounds like a pair of harleys in perfect time. Will pull the plugs when i get home tonight to see how the mix is doing but the bike ran great.
