engine problems?

    i haven't been on here in a while. i got my bike out today to see if it would start still cuz it's been sitting for a couple months. i got it started and it took a long time for it to warm up and for me to be able to even attempt to drive it. every time i would give it some throttle it would want to die. i got it going down the road finally and after going around the block it was warm and idled fine and ran nicely. i took it around the block a couple more times and noticed that when i put it in neutral it would idle around 5grand or so. i'm still learning this bike and any thoughts would help.

    What a coincidence.I just got on here to seek help for the same prob.

    Mine idled about 3,500 after fully warmed up when i first got it a couple months ago.Now it goes right to 4,000 to 5,000 as soon as I fire it up,and stays there till I shut it off :cry:

    Weird thing is,my Honda Nighthawk 650 has done the same thing for the whole 4 1/2 years I've had it.Not quite as bad,about 3,000 rpm.I cleaned the carbs 3 times thinking that had to be it,with no difference.Finally just gave up and decided I just had to live with it :x

    The very first thing to do before tearing into it would be to use starting fluid or an unlit propane torch to probe for vacuum leaks, but it's kind of difficult to perform that at 5000 rpm. Assuming no obvious vacuum leak (carb boots loose or cracked all the way through, split in vacuum line to petcock, etc.) then:

    1: Complete, thorough carburetor cleaning and rebuild (replace anything that NEEDS it.) Ensure they pass the "clunk test."

    2: Float level check/adjust if necessary; using FLUID (gasoline preferred.)

    3: Bench sync, followed by running vacuum sync.

    4: ColorTune, resync, repeat until perfect.

    Leave any steps out and you'll be at it for a while (until you do them all.)

    Duh!!! I am such an idiot.Just looked at the back of the carbs,and there's a screw,really more like a "star wheel" so you can grab right onto it to turn it by hand,to adjust the idle speed.Even with my small hands,it was hard to get up in there,so I used a screwdriver to push on it

    After cranking it out about 8 million turns (I'm exaggerating a little),got it adjusted to about 1,000 rpm,right where it's supposed to be.Makes me wonder tho,why it was turned in so far

    Haven't ridden it yet,but I let it warm up for quite a while before adjusting it,so I think it'll be good to go now.Can't believe I put up with 5,000 rpm idle for several long rides when it was so quick and easy to fix

    I'm gonna go kick myself in the posterior repeatedly now :oops:

    When I was working on my xj it would do the same thing. When I started it it would immediatly jump up to 5k. I ended up taking off all of the carb boots, resealing them and it fixed the problem.

    i think over the winter i'll get some new carb boots. it can't hurt. i haven't really looked much into it but i will. and i'm leaking oil by the oil level switch i think, so it smells good when it's hot. thanks for all the advice.

    Home depot. 1/4' plumbling coupling. Works like a charm as new box to carb boots. 1.75 a pop too vs 95 for all four
