i am located in boise idaho, i've tried craigslist and the local motorcycle junkyards, but the junkyards don't keep the titles and i haven't been able to find one that's titled on craigslist, i've been thinking of maybe buying an xj650 parts bike and converting the 550 to a shaft drive, but i'm not sure how much a hassel that would be :? any ideas?

    It's really not a hassle at all. . .

It's impossible, so you skip it.

Check with you state to see what all is involved with getting an assembler's title. Here in Michigan, they are not that hard to get. You just need to document where you got all the parts, and they run any numbers to see if anything is hot. That way you can just get the frame, or possibly most of the bike from the junk yard without a title, and just build it the way you want.

Why not just step up to a 650 or buy a whole 550? You might be able to find one that needs restoring for cheap but it'll have a title.
