I may be bringing up old news to you guys but some on here may not know of this. Striking an arc on metal that has Brake Cleaner on it can be a serious to fatal mistake. Go to the following website and read a first hand account of this.

Just to clarify, this happened using a GAS SHIELD mig. It's the reaction from the shield gas and the brake cleaner that caused the noxious fumes.

I use a gasless mig myself.....

Gasless mig? If you arent using gas it isnt mig (metal inert gas or GMAW) welding it is considered flux core arc welding or FCAW.

It sucks that the poor guy learned the hard way about the possible dangers we dont even think about. I have mig welded several things after cleaning them with the same brand brake cleaner. It must have evaporated in time or the ar/co2 mix didnt react as strongly as the straight argon did with the guy. Either way I must be one lucky person and I wont do that again.

It's a wire feed welder using flux core. They still call them MIG welders whether you use a gas shield or flux core.

seems it's the UV not the argon
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosgene

"Chlorinated compounds used to remove oils from metals may also react under the UV created during arc welding to produce phosgene."
