There is a few of us vancouver locals around here. I only just joined the forum a few weeks ago - I sure am impressed with the knowledge many of the members here have for these bikes!

Leadboots, are you in YVR, or are you back in Aylmer ON?

    Thanks and hi , Jeff,
Yes, Leadboots and YVRxj650 I am in Burnaby and usually take my bikes to work in North Van to wrench them. I am on holidays next week and will be doing some bike work if the weather stays rainy. Monday the front wheel comes off the 650 so I can get a new tire installed on Tuesday. Jeff has got me curious if my 750 tank will fit on my 650- I find the range is a little too low with the scalloped 650 tank.
If either of you want to get together for coffee or compare bikes I'll give you my cellphone number if you PM me.
I usually ride all year except when there is snow or ice on the ground. I started Jan. 15th this year.
    Eric

YVRxj650 and I went for a short ride from Burnaby to Belcarra and the "ghost town" of Ioco, this afternoon.

The only thing better than hearing the exhaust from one XJ bike is listening to two of them wind up through the gears and sharing the fun of riding together on some vintage XJ's !

    Hi, Jeff

Come on up anytime! How about an XJ meet up in Canada next year?

What would be the best month for everyone?

April told me it was my turn next year :)

I'd be in. My first thought is late May, early June. Less rain and warmer weather. That's a long way off, tho...

    Hey guys!

I just joined the forum, would love to get together and talk xj's with you dudes! I am in the process of restoring a 1981 xj650, and would appreciate any help I can get. This forum seems like just the thing I was looking for.

    Cheers!

Hey Lee, glad you are aboard.

You are in the right place - this forum is GREAT - especially for people like me who are not mechanically inclined. Lots of friendly members who can help with everything XJ related.

If you have any specific questions about your restoration, you might want to do a search - from reading through here the past couple months, it seems that many topics have already been covered in depth. On that score, I would recommend this recent post - "Things to do before you post": http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=9032.html

And, as you can see from this string - meeting up with other local XJers.

You should post your location and that you own an 81 XJ650 (maxim or seca?) in your signature and profile - that way the other members can better help you when you have a question about restoring your XJ.

Good luck wrenching your bike - I'm going to try to get some rides in before the rains come...

    Hi, Lee and Alan

I have PM'd both of you.

I am in North Burnaby and travel through Coquitlam so a coffee is a definite possibility!

Let's see some pics of your bike and hear what you need to get on the road with us!

Count me in..I'd agree with YVR on the May/June being the best time. But really, any time is good.
Just getting packed to head over to Victoria tomorrow. Take a few days and visit family. Just hope the weather holds..

Some possibilities to move the planning ahead:

The Canadian Victoria Day holiday falls on Monday, May 24 so perhaps Saturday May 22 or Sunday May 23 so XJ'ers from both sides of the border could attend.

Alternatives would be the weekend before or the weekend after if the holiday weekend would interfere with family events.

IF we can get a time pinned down, we can then work on a location and group event.

I would suggest the week after - the "May Two-Four" weekend is pretty sacred to my family and friends. And, if it were not the long weekend, our U.S. compadres won't have to battle long weekend border lines...

So, for my 0.02, I'd say Saturday, May 29.

    Hi, Alan

OK now we have a day, May 29. I could see problems with the long weekend, too.

I have been asking Gamuru for advice and Don said just pick a day.

I think we just did that.

Step 2 is location: close to the border, in the city, in the valley, North Van so we could go to Squamish or Whistler?

    Anybody any suggestions?

Date is now firm Saturday, May 29, 2010

I agree that it would be wise to avoid traveling on a holiday weekend. The traffic would be brutal everywhere, not just on the border. Hotels and campgrounds will book up early as well, in case anyone is thinking about overnighting it.
It is not at all too early to start planning this. Gives me lots of time to buy a calandar and mark it, get my DL enhanced, and save up cash. Should be a great time!

    Hi, Scholz

I have a vacuum gauge but haven't made up the hoses and fittings to make a proper syncing tool yet. I have been looking at various options and setups. I may just pick up three more gauges to keep things simple.

I will be starting to do a major tuneup on my 750 this week and can let you know when I get ready to do a sync and you can borrow the setup if it works out OK. I'll keep you posted. It will probably be two weeks before I am ready to try syncing.

    P.S.

I have one vacuum gage but couldn't get it to work that well even with a resticktor and a fuel filter inline....

Was hoping to find someone with mercury or Stainless vacuum gage.

    I love wrenchin'

    Hi, Scholz

OK, I will stop going down the multiple gauge route if that didn't work out for you and get a proper Vacuum Carb Synchronizer like this:

    https://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1689

I 'll let you know when I receive it. I have 8 carbs to sync so I may as well get the right tool.

Hope you guys are out riding today! I'm sitting in my office downtown, looking at the perfect blue October sky and thinking of my XJ silently waiting for me in my garage... :(

We are not going to get many more days like this before Spring. Now where did I put that winning lotto ticket so I can bail on this job...

Got out for a short scoot this afternoon - legs getting a bit chilly at speed.

Mine is insured year round - not sure yet if I will winterize and store, or keep her ready for those elusive sunny afternoons.

I guess you've got your winter all planned out - when the rains come, I'll drop by with drinks and you can give me the tour of your garage!

    Hi, Alan

Yes, that's the one, I'll tell you the long story when I see you.
I'm keeping the 650 turbo and the 750 Seca at work and I will be spending the rainy weekends there wrenching them. I'll show you around when you come visit. I have quite the shop available to me right up to Haas CNC machining. My bike frame will fit in our latest machine.

May 29. It's on my calander. Maybe a trip up Kalowna way. Check out a few wineries?
Thought I'd throw a pic of the new toy up. Need a good clean, but loving it. Don't know why I ever sold my first one..

Good to have you aboard JR. We are hoping to have a Vancouver area ride May 29, 2010 - after the olympic madness leaves the province.

Hopefully I will have my xj running again by then.

You might want to put what type of XJ you have in your signature, so when you ask questioins people know what you are talking about.

I am just checking in and reporting I am back out on the road with the 650 Seca dodging the Olympic traffic.

I have been in Alaska 50% of this year so far, but I am looking forward to seeing more XJ'ers here after the Olympics are over.

    Agreed, Eric.

Weather has been fantastic - was out on the maxim this past Saturday as well. Not a big fan of hosting the Olympics, but will try to enjoy them as best I can while they are here.

    How's that turbo coming?

And we should turn our minds to the Vancouver ride in May!

    Hi, Alan

It is time to start getting the details firmed up for the Vancouver meet up !

I may be gone to Alaska again next week, but any time when I am here you want to get together and start bouncing some ideas around, let me know.
The turbo is not running yet, but I only need a few more parts before I start it up. Getting the fairings done up will take a while, but it is a mean looking bike with all the plastic off, I may ride it like that for a bit.

One stop we should add on the Vancouver meet up is a stop at the Motorcycle Museum at Trev Deeley's . I know they are a Harly Dealer and make me park my "metric" out back :) but the collection and display are superb:

    http://www.deeleymotorcycleexhibition.c ... ection.htm

    From the Peace Arch Crossing:
Follow Highway 99 North heading into Vancouver. Take the EAST Marine exit after the bridge. Follow SE Marine Dr. until you reach Boundary Road. Turn left onto Boundary and follow the road for approximately 7km. Turn left at 2nd Avenue and left into the first parking lot.

Does anyone have an objection to adding this stop to the ride?
This may be a good place to first meet up. Any other suggestions?

As discussed in this thread, Plansea and I are in the infant stages of pulling together a ride for May 29, 2010.

I have posted notes in both the Victoria and the Northwest Washington threads, but have started a new post dedicated to the ride. Although it is pretty much empty right now, please follow it if you are interested in joining us.

    Looking forward to it.
