Hi, the brakes on the 1982 maxim 650 I picked up a few weeks ago need work. The P.O. broke off one of the heads on one of the two screws used to hold the top cover on the master cylinder and I managed to strip the head on the remaining screw. Rather than mess around with a master cylinder that needs to be rebuilt anyway I was looking t see if anyone has successfully used new Asian master cylinders that are on Ebay, stock type or radial?

    Thanks,

    Rich

There's a ton of MC's that will work on your 650 without any mods, assuming you pick an MC with the right size bore -- smaller bore for a single rotor, larger for a dual rotor setup. Also, a lot of Yamahas from that era have a reverse-thread mirror mount on the right, so unless you want to use an adapter or move your mirrors, you have to watch out for that.

Another thing is the reservoir angle. Some MCs have a slanted reservoir for certain handlebar types... The angle of the mirror mount also has to match the left-side mount on the clutch perch, otherwise your mirrors would look goofy. The 650 Maxims use the angled reservoir unit, i believe.

Our resident parts guru, Chacal, carries master cylinders for just about any XJ. PM him for more info.

thanks Stereomind, I have the angled resevoir. I am not a big fan of the bull horn handlebars and I will probably change them eventually (along with installing bar end mirrors) but that is lower on the bikes to do list after getting the brakes sorted, the fork seals replaced and disassembling and cleaning the carbs. I am afraid to PM Chacal how much a master cylinder is since I fell off my chair over how much the intake manifolds are, lol! (I am use to paying ~ $10 for snowmobile carb manifolds: I will clean and slather the cracked manifolds with silicone when I clean the carbs to save money and avoid breaking one of the bolts) I will buy one of the asian radial master cylinders when I figure out which would be proper from a cylinder diameter and banjo fitting.

i used one like this from this place on e-bay for the maxim and it works fine, although i might have a time finding a lever or rebuild kit
for the seca i just went to the boneyard and got one from a gsxr and it works the same but i know what i've got and can buy parts for it

    banjo bolts are 10 X 1.25

+1 for stereomind on the reverse thread. i broke mine
off not realizing that little detail.
you can tell them apart by looking at the bottom mounting
nut. it appears to be a set nut and locking nut combo but
its not-just a way to tell the diff.

Thanks for the all the information. I have a bid on a Master Cylinder in Ebay from the same vendor Polock referenced. I have bought off brand master cylinders for snowmobiles from Ebay before with good luck but it is great to get feedback from folks that have been successful with motorcycle parts.
