    The prevailing wisdom is no.
I, however, have recovered a few OEM cotton filters through a long and laborious process of spraying an air filter cleaner (the emulsion type, like K&N or Castrol SuperClean), letting it soak about half an hour (don't let it dry out, keep it wet), rinsing from the inside out under the tap in the kitchen (do not use high pressure!) and allowing it to dry for one or two days. I will follow this cycle until it is clean (usually two to three). Regrease the sealing foam gasket (it seals the air filter to the air box) and you are done. Now you can weigh this against how much time this takes and the value of your time over the cost of a replacement. The replacement is cheaper but I offer that my method is more environmentally friendly as you aren't tossing the filter into a landfill until it is no longer useful. Think of it this way, the element is cotton, not unlike your undershirt but you don't throw it away and put on a new one every day, do you? You wash it and reuse it. A bit of care and patience and you can make a difference. And I've NOT seen any difference in reusing my filter. Bike runs just fine.
    Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply Robert. If I could find a new replacement filter I would buy it, but it seems there is no OEM or aftermarket filter for this bike (xj1100). :(
