Well, went to the local motorcycle salvage yard and got my filter. Picked up some Valvoline 20W50 cycle oil. All ready to go. Had no problem getting the oil drain plug out. Wow there was a lot of oil in there. Then the fun started. and tried as I could, the oil filter bolt would not budge.
So, A lot of you said it is OK to only change the filter every other change. I will be ordering a new filter bolt from Chacal and getting the special socket from Craftsman for rounded bolts ........

    Hi Dave,

I'm surprised about the first part... going to a salvage yard for a filter.

Seems like an odd place to get one. FWIW, Advance Auto Parts also carries them.

    Cheers,
    Paul

yah, the manual suggets oil change at 3000 mil. oil
and filter at 6k on mine.
i think thats fine but prefer to do both every 2k or so.

probly over doing it but clean oil seems like the the best thing
to do for the bike......or rather......dirty oil as the worst thing.

Well I took it for a ride and it sounded good. Shifted a little smoother too. As for the salvage yard, I could have got it at Advanced Auto, but I needed to order it and 2 days for shipping. Next time for sure. It was 2 dollars cheaper at Advanced. So how do I order from Chacal my bolt for the next time?

Chacal has a forum called XJ4Ever. That's his catalog, and ordering instructions are there as well.

Too bad about Advance. Out here they stock them.

    Where are you located, BTW?

Depending on whether or not you're intent on keeping it stock, you could order the spin on adaptor kit for your bike from Chacal. It makes life so much easier!

It's free advice, take it for what it's worth.

I live in Phoenix AZ. Which means I don't get a winter project. I ride it to work every day.
I thought about the spin on oil adapter. I am not completely all about stock, But I am not sure about the filter sticking out there. Does anyone make a silver looking filter??

    Krylon's good.
They got some nice Dupli-Color stuff.

But, for that "Unique" looking option, ... I visit a Hobby Shop and get the legendary "Testors"

When I'm in the mood to add some Genuine Custom Color Touches.
    Hardware store. Vinyl Electrical Tape.
Pharmacy. Cosmetics Aisle. Nail Polish "On sale" rack.

Lay the tape on getting the Line or Curve you want to highlight.
Lay-on another strip to Mask the WIDTH of the Stripe.
Brush-on the Nail Polish like you were painting your Mistress's toes.
Then, pull-off the Tape in one steady pull.
    Other side too.
Bingo. Look at that Beautiful Pinstripe that just happened!

dwatson636, whats the manufacturer for your filters?

Most of the local bike shops up here have HIFLOS in stock @ around
    $4.95 a pop.
Their not high qualitiy by any means but seem to do the job well
enough, though, with cheep filters I would not skip the required
    change period of 6k.
Mine still look pretty good after 2 or 2.3 k and i keep a couple
of these old ones around "just in case".
+1 on the dupli-color. but get engine paint. it's a bit more $$
but is tough and will resist the road abuse better then reg rattle
    can IMHO.

I think that Chacal carries a chrome plated one. At least it seems that I remember that being an option when I bought the kit last year.

Let's see if I can attach a picture of my filter, it's pretty inconspicuous.

    I got a Fram CH6003
Mikeg, That does not look bad. Maybe I will get the spin on kit.
Is it then a special oil filter for the kit, or is it a common one I can at the autozone?

So if I get the Fram kit from Chacal, I can't get the Fram filters from the autozone?

If you purchase the spin-on oil filter conversion kit, it does not use the Fram CH6003 filter that they are discussing in this thread........that filter number is for the OEM filter system.

Almost all of the different versions of spin-on oil filters are available at local automotive parts stores.

However, be aware that the large Fram spin-on filter will not properly fit some model XJ bike models, as the spacing between the two center exhaust pipes is not large enough to allow this rather large filter to pass through. All of the other spin-on filters that we offer.........the so-called "mini" spin-on filters..........will fit all the different model bikes and their exhaust systems.

Thanks for the info, if almost all the versions are available in the auto parts stores, which ones are not? Also, why are they different prices? What is the differences in the kits? Not talking about the large one.

The difference in the price of the individual conversion kits is just due to the differnt oil filters that come with each of the different kits.....the more expensive the filter element, the more expensive the "kit"!

Some stores don't carry the Amsoil or Emgo filters.........almost all of the other style oil filters (Fram, K&N, Purolator) are available in parts stores. Actually, there's quite a few other brand/size oil filters that will work with the conversion kit, as long as it's the right size (at the base, where it contacts the adapter plate) and has the right size threads. Also, it's preferrable that they have the same by-pass valve setting as the stock oil filter Yamaha system (about 15 lbs.).

Hello, I live in Vegas, the median temperture mid june to mid september is about 107* with days that I have experienced at over 119 in the shade. I recently came back here from Long Beach and I am worried about the summer temps, and the air cooled engine from japan. VW built fairly reliable engines, the DKW was reliable enough for Rommul in their days, but even VW/s used off road frequently have oil coolers, so I thought that any kind of adapter plummed for a remote filter could easily be adapted to an oil cooler as well.
Since you were discussing oil filter adaptation, I thought the door was open for a more elaborate question. where do I get one or how do I make one?
