I thought this post looked familiar, so I looked back at the VentureRider.org site. I see you're over there too.

Don't see a Venture in your sig. Speak up!

As far as a helmet goes, I'd go with an inexpensive full face. It'll be outgrown in no time.

Be nice to try on, but I've never seen a child motorcycle helmet in a bricks and mortar store.

You want to take 2 year old on your bike? I would thin k that's not recommended. How would they hold on properly?

I don't let the kids actually ride on my street bikes until they're physically large enough to reach the pegs and hold on, then I get them a youth helmet of their own until they outgrow it. Then they get their own full face.

In Victoria, Australia, it is now illegal to carry a child under 8yrs old on a motorcycle unless in a sidecar. Also no animals between the handlebars and the rider. (exemption for farmers on agbikes but only for 500m on road)

Well thank you and for those who may be concerned

1 i am looking at the possibiltiy of buying a 1985 venture
2 my son adores absolutely completely and without exception motorcycles
3 absolutely no long trips for him and no way does he get out on busy roads with me

so there you have it basically if i have on a hat he wants his on so i am sure when my helmet goes on he will want one and when i kick my shoes off after a long day. it dont matter if he just put his on he kicks his off and sits beside me (or rather his mom puts them on)

    sorry but thats just crazy.

love riding or not there are too many risks involved in riding
as an adult, and you want to put a tottler on a bike?

exactly how much of a chance do you think your child has of
living through a head on when the cager does'nt see you and turns
    right into your face?????????

we have all had it happen and often.. we have bike deaths weekly
this state, your just asking to get into the newspaper in a very bad
    way IMHO.

but...........at that age they cannot escape serious injury if the
bike go's over,no matter what the cause.

if you feel" your "excitment of this idea is worth the risk of your
child having many broken bones (thats providing you can pick the bike off in time then all the power to you.

i don't put my child at risk for my enjoyment. and thats all i'll say on the subject.

I have a three year old myself. I can't get on any bike without him trying to climb on. I normally just drive him around the yard on the grass. I usually use a bicycle helmet.

This issue has been brought up quite a bit in the snowmobile websites. There is a problem with small kids wearing helmets. It was actually stated somewhere, (I can't remember exactly where I heard it) the kids that small should not use a helmet, or to use a bicycle helmet, because if they fall off, the weight of the helmet could snap their neck. - (This was a link in a snowmobile forum that is saying this. No pavement)

Driving on the road, a DOT approved helmet is required. I would just go with a child's size half helmet. Another thing you may want to invest in, is a harness for the child. Check out the snowmobile catalogs. It is a harness the you and the child wear to strap the child to you. Similar to the tandem parachute jumpers. This way, if the bike does go down, you can push it away, and surround the child to protect them.

My son rode for thousands of miles sandwiched between my wife and me.
When it was just him and me he rode in front.

PLEASE DO NOT let any pre-teen ride on the back. They just can’t be trusted to hold on.

    Here’s a picture of my 5 yr old, he’s 39 now.
    That's a Ducati he's on.

I'll be taking my (he'll be 4 in April) grandson for his first ride this spring.
He wants to go now but no helmet and it's cold.

IT’S ALWAYS TERRIBLE when a child is lost!!
Last week we had 3 die (2 were sisters) at the same time, they were JUST crossing a dark street.

BUT you can’t lock them in a box, it takes 100% concentration 24/7/365/18+ and then maybe you can take a break.

I’ve got a picture somewhere of my son water skiing at 5.
NOW that was scary when he fell or dropped off!!

For the harness, I would try JRGraham.com, or Dennis Kirk. Just look at the snowmobile catalog.

HARNESS?? Do THEY really make a harness for kids?
Remember when the DOgooders tried to put seatbelts on motorcycles.
I would have to do some SERIOUS thinking before I put a harness on my grandson!

The last thing I want would be for my fat A$$ sliding down the road dragging him behind me OR even worse using him for a skateboard!

If you do decide to ride with your 3 yr old here are a couple of “This is the voice of experience speaking”.

    1. They put their feet in places you wouldn’t think of.
You’ll be riding along and suddenly he’ll start twitching and squirming because he’s been using the cylinder head for foot pegs. Hot Hot HOt my feet are HOT. This was when he was 8 or so.

    2. The biggest problem I had was on longer rides (sometimes less than :15) he would go to sleep and lay his head on the tank. OK till it’s time to stop and you need to put a foot down. 3 up and a sleeping kid is OK with the kid in the middle.

I pick my son (9) up at school for our 1 mile ride home. He fits a med full face helmet and (shhhh don't let him know) Santa is bringing him ( and the rest of the family) a riding jacket with armor to go with his boots. I was set back as I watched a parent pick up his little girl and put a bicycle helmet and then a half helmet on this tiny girl, load her on his scooter wearing thin shirt and shorts and then motor off (PUTZ) I agree with waiting until they are physically and emotionally ready, Zach was big enough but he would get comfortable and fall asleep... not good! For off road fun they sell the right equiptment... it takes some searching... be safe!
