OK, So I am driving down the freeway today. Doing 65 with an RPM of 5000. I know everyone says you can ride in the black all day. But it just sounds like it is revving so high and pinging so much. Is this normal? I seem to be waiting for it to explode. I just changed the oil and at lower speeds it sounds quite and OK.

Sound to me like you need to:

Get some New Cooling Fin Rubber Dampers and Install them.
    After:
Checking the Cam Chain Tension and re-setting the Tensioner "Manually"
Measure you Valve Clearances and see if you have any that are too loose.
Tape a short, narrow strip of tissue to the end of a long screwdriver and probe for Exhaust Leaks.
Some exhaust leaks sound like engine knocks.
Hold the "Flag" close to Collars and Clamps and see if it flutters at the exhaust leaking.

No No. It is not what I meant. Sorry, I was just wondering what a good cruising rpm would be for my 650J. At 65 I am pushing 5000 and wondered if that was too high for constant riding?

A 5,500 to 6,000 rpm's the Engine is at Cruising Speed in Top Gear.

You ought to be able to ride a 6000 rev's, on the open road, with no problem.

You even have some room for adding rpm's for High-speed running before you get anywhere close to the Engines Red Line.

Cool, It just seems that when I am riding at 5k that I am winding it out. But I guess not. I will open it up next time I am on the freeway.

Ride for a few miles at 7k, when you throttle back to 5k it will seem like the motor is just ticking over. 8)

    DW,
I have the same bike and same year. At 7000 rpm's I'm at 90 mph. These are just high reving bikes. Enjoy it man, we have 8" - 14" of snow coming, starting late tonight.

The 550s are wound even a little tighter at road speed; 5000-6000rpm is cruising speed (60-70mph) I regularly run about 78-80mph in morning freeway traffic and the bike just loves it. Wiz is right, and you could run along at 7K rpm for hours if you wanted.

If it really concerns you that much you could change the size of your sprockets. My XJ 550 runs around 5000 rpm at 60 mph i think and i was concerned about the high revs just like you. Asked my uncle about it cause he has been a long time biker and he said that these inline fours are screamers. They love to run at high rpms. I took a three hour ride on north bound 1-75 and my average speed was 80 mph and it ran fine the whole time. Just make sure that your oil levels are not low.
