hey guys now ive got a clutch problem. when i got the bike last week the clutch worked but it was nearly maxed rite out on the adjustment. then i stripped the bike down and it sat there while i painted and replaced bearing etc. now i just got it all back together and when i use the clutch it doesnt work , the bike just stays in gear. i can change gears etc but when i want to use the clutch it doesnt work. i tried to adjust the clutch rite out, nothing. then i moved the arm 1 then 2 splines still doesnt work properly ?
does any body have any ideas i really wanted to ride the bike 2day :(
could the clutch be stuck together or something.

yeah i rode the bike around for about 2hrs . the clutch worked fine not much freeplay in it tho. i think maybe it might be the old oil that is in it may have stuck the plates together ? since the old owner prob never changed the oil. i was just goin to warm it up and then drain it 2day. cause i didnt want to leave the motor with no oil while i did the rebuild

Hey Brenton, A properly functioning clutch will start to grab at @ half way out from the grip. How does the oil look that is in it now? and just for reference, it is a REAL easy jod to change out the clutch in one of these bikes. I did the one in my old 82 XJ 750 in less than an hour. Parts are around 60 to 70 bucks US. Try changing the oil and filter. If that doesn't make it work then, with it running on the center stand, work the clutch lever and (if you can get to where the cable hooks down at the tranny,) tap the actuator lever to try and jar the disks loose. Sounds like you need new clutch disks and springs though. Keep in touch.

    Kelly

PS If you do decide to go with the clutch disks, it can be done without even draining the oil out of the bike. Hope I was of some help...

Well - you have the good problem, not the bad problem. If the clutch plates were toast the bike would feel like it was stuck with the clutch lever pulled in - slipping and not going anywhere.

What you need to do is tighten, not loose the clutch cable. Right now it sounds like the cable is too long, and when you pull the lever in you don't have enough pull to seperate the plates... which makes it feel like you're stuck in gear.

Give that a try ( or tell me that I misunderstood your problem),

    Cheers,
    woot.

When replacing the clutch cover, the lever arm must be held back parallel to the gasket surface, with the notch for the cable pointing towards the back of the bike. If the cover is installed with the lever arm at right angles to the gasket surface, you will not have enough travel to properly disengage the clutch when you pull it in, and probably not enough adjustment in the cable to overcome it.

im not really sure what you mean , i didnt take the clutch apart but maybe the po might have. when the clutch is pulled rite in the arm is about perpendicular to the mating surface for the gasket, is that about right ?
    thanks brenton
