Happy Holidays to all, a quick question... i have a tank bag and a set of throw over saddle bags that came with my 83 seca 750, is it necessary to install some kind of bracket under the seat to keep the bags from becoming entangled in the rear wheel?? PO said he rode this bike cross country not sure if it was with the bags that came with bike...the bags are nylon with push in buckles... opinions?? thnx NJrider

Depends on the bags and how they fit the bike. I have a set that I've used over the years on my Norton, and they never had a problem. That particular set has plastic stiffeners inside them though.

Most of the ones I have require some sort of support. It is not hard to fabricate brackets to hold bags up. On my XJ's and XS bikes I always have the same problem with bags hitting the shocks.

I have used two sets of soft saddlebags and have put many thousands of miles on with them in place. On our bikes, the shocks keep the bags off the wheel and I've never had a problem with the shocks rubbing on the bags. My latest set are MotoPak. Attached photos show the mounting straps at the front and rear of the bags. Front ones I loop around the passenger peg bracket and the rear ones I pass from bag to bag over the rear fender. The bags have a nylon insert that gives them some shape and stability.

I have an old set of Willie and Max bags that I could not seem to get to fit with an under the seat mounting when I had a stock exhaust. After installing the 4 into 1 they fit great and did not seem to need supports. One day, however, I must have hit a big bump because the axel nut on one side tore the corner stitching a bit. End result is that I am going to fabricate some saddle bag supports over the winter.

My PO had leather throw overs on the bike. One of the first things I did was remove them and scrape a rather thick layer of burnt leather off of the the mufflers. I reworked the tie downs and cross strap so they wouldn't hit anymore.
The leather was rather thick and rigid so I didn't worry about supports.
