Hello Turbo people. I have learned that it's impossible to get a new air filter element to the XJ 650 turbo, so what do you do?
I have the old element and was thinking of dismanteling the element and adapt some other air filter element hm... suggestions...

Re: Turbo XJ 650 - Air Filter Element?

The Venture air filter is $70 ; someone bought foam from a fabric shop and glued it in place. You would need to get JUST the right foam. Too "open" and you don't collect all the dust.

Does Chacal have the Turbo filter?? I thought he did.

Re: Turbo XJ 650 - Air Filter Element?

It has been discontinued from the manufacturer - Yamaha. I have tried Chacal, he does not have it.
So I thought there must be others who has been in the same situation.
So Turbo people what do you do?

Re: Turbo XJ 650 - Air Filter Element?

Well I have tried to order at Chacal, but this is what I got back:
    ----------------
    Hi,
Thanks for writing. Unfortunately this air filter is no longer available, it has been discontinued from the manufacturer.
    Thanks, Len
    ----------------
So, an air filter from XVZ1300 VENTURE, as proposed earlier, could do the job with some modifications.
But what do you do out there - turbo folks, when you have to change air filter?

Post a picture of the filter and some dimensions - perhaps there is an alternative or we can suggest what to do.

Here is what I did, and it worked rather well......go buy a piece of universal foam element from uni or the like, and carefully peel the old element off the plastic of the old air filter body........measure and cut a piece of the new foam filter and wrap it around the naked original filter body and hot glue it.....install and you have a clean, better flowing filter compared to the stock paper element. Unlike all the other n/a xj's, the turbo will like more air flow without having jetting or runability problems.

I second the uni foam method. They sell bulk foam. Glue it in place with "Shoe Goo". It is used to repair athletic shoes and dries clear. I have also heard of guys buying automotive filters and cutting the element out, cut to shape, glue in and you are in business. Bye the way, we have just spent about $15 including the glue and it does work just fine.

Let's see now, where did i forgot the air filter element? And those tiny screws?
Hope there is a loooong time to spring. This bike has not been started for 10 years. Uhh! thats a long time.
    - But all brakes done, turbo checked and is OK, Carburettors - what a mess hm... Clunk test - OK, float needle OK, fuel level OK, Enrichment Valve OK, cleaned and reassembled OK. So! now there is only 592 things left on the check list - peace of cake.

Thanks guys! I think i got the idea about the air filter element.
    Happy New Year 8)

Do you use filter oil or keep them dry?
And will they work as well on standerd yics motors?
I need to do a filter change like now but very few $$$.
Thought about just cleaning in mild soap and water then air drying
the stock element-it's cotton not paper (or cotton over paper-not sure yet)
    thx,
    Ron
