I recieved an 80's something 750 maxim I believe (no title, no tins, back of the frame gone). However, the good side is it's showing less than 2500 on the clock, and it runs out really well. Now for the question. I would like to eliminate the four hundred pounds of wiring this thing has. I need the bare minimum. I'm NOT running headlights, tailights, blinkers, dash, tach, speedo, brake light, horn, or any other gizmos.
What I would like is a on/off toggle somewhere and kill switch and starter button on handle bars.
And all wires used to charge the alt and power the coils and ignition. Is there help out there, or am I just a bit looney? From what I've looked at so far, there has to be at least 100 wires buried in the headlight alone..lol.

Thanks for your time in advance.

It shouldn't be too hard. We turned my buddy's Honda Ascott into a dirtbike and removed everything just starting from the component we were eliminating back. The switches will be easy to romove, replace and relocate. If you can splice wiring and can attach desired components, you can do it. The ascott was as easy as pie even though it looked intimidating at first. Also, the Clymer should have a wiring diagram for everything on the bike from the harness.
    Good luck.

First, wanted to say WELCOME to the site! Can't really help with the wiring problem yet but SURE hope to end up with minimum wiring, myself. Even with help it's REAL intimidating  . Trying to get everything running as good as possible before tearing it apart  ...

Just out of curiosity, What do you plan to do with the bike without all the wiring?

Is it the "Minimum wiring diagram for Yamaha XJ series"?
That still looks like greek to me, so I'll have a buddy come over and translate.
    Thanks

It'll be running the 1/8th mile at "Hey, You lost?" Dragway. Tech inspection is pretty easy as I'm the inspector. Come to think of it, I own it as well. As long as the state and local boys are patroling elsewhere, the frontage road serves as a nice shutdown area. When they're around, we just bench race....lol. Ahh, country living, you gotta love it.

It looks scary but it isn't too bad, the hardest part is seperating the throw away vs. the keep, then its a sinch really. I followed the min wiring diagram here and it is a good start I did it a bit different with the fuses, give it a go we are here to help I know I can't be the only one to use the diagram.

    I would:

Get the Bike running real good.
    Wicked-good.
Sell it for a profit and buy something worthy of stripping-down or beefing-up to Drag Race.

Before you lay the first wrench on a XJ-650 to strip it all down to go a short distance, in a straight, line faster than the guy next to you, ... you need to re-evaluate what you can expect from that 650 Plant and Final Drive Unit.
Even if your Fairy Godmother waves her Twinkling Wand and every conceivable Race-Prep gets done to it, your Times are only going to get so good.

Most Bone Stock late-model Sport Bikes, in your class, with all their Plastic, extra Skid-bars, Steering Dampers, LED's, GPS, NOS and 12 O'Clock Bars are going to get their riders down to the finish line, with enough time to brew you a Cup-of-Tea before that Yamaha Shaftie crosses-over the line behind them.

Don't sugar coat it now, tell me how you really feel Rick...lol. But, you missed one thing, I'm "chief cook and bottle washer" at MY track. I can make the playing field really tilt in my favor...lol. But point taken.

Now where do I get side covers and a gas tank for a 750 Maxim?

Side Covers are considered: Hard to Find!

But, you can get lucky on Ebay or in here.
