New to site and buying a xj650 have questions

Hello I am new like title says so sup y'all. I have came across a guy a few miles away from me who is selling an 82 xj650 for $50.00 so I am gonna buy it. The engine is taken apart on it and rear tire removed but comes with all the parts except a title. I have searced quite abit on this site for some info on how to aquire a title and haven't found anything yet. So my question is how do I go about getting a title for the bike? My plans are to chop it up and make it a hard tail with about a 4" stretch on the back and am wanting to rake the front out to roughly 36* and put a springer front end on it(is the springer possible with out changing out the neck) and change the front and rear wheels to wire. How with this bike being shaft driven would I switch out the rear wheel to a wire one and if anyone has a place to by wire wheels for this bike please post a link.

Thank you very much and am picking the bike up this weekend. I figured for 50 if it was gonna be to much hassle getting a title I could just part it out and buy a different bike.

Here in Oklahoma we have a "Title 42" law that allows you to claim ownership of a vehicle that has been left on your property, e.g. a repair that someone has abandoned/not paid for, or unpaid storage. Basically, if you get a title-less bike, you can do some work to it, let it sit in your garage for a couple of months, and then file the 42 papers. If the original owner shows up with the cash to pay for storage and repairs, you have to return the bike to him/her. Otherwise, the process goes on and the state issues you a new title... This is assuming the bikes is not stolen...

I just went through this with my 650G project. My bill (mostly storage) ended up over $3,000, and there was not a peep from the original owner, so I should be getting the title papers any day...

There may be something similar in your state/country. These laws are used heavily by towing/salvage companies, as well as land owners that have to deal with abandoned mobile homes.

 

In Michigan you could walk into the Secretary of State with the VIN and a bill of sale. Takes them about 10 minutes to confirm the bike isn't reported stolen and they'll issue a title.

You really need to check with your state DMV or Secretary of State.

 

Carl is absolutely right, and in most cases you can find all the info you need on the WEB SITE for your state.

 

MiCarl is correct, another thing you can do is have it impounded and after 30 days claim it you get a new title and life goes on but its costly about 130 depending on where you go

Worst case scenario you have a bike you can part out and make more than $50 bucks on. If the web doesn't help, go to your local motor vehicle and ask them the procedure for getting a new title.

 

In New Hampshire Vehicles 15 years and older do not require a title.

Here's what I am doing . Found this website that searches for titles and they found the last recorded title and the state it was in. Also said there was no encumberances...meaning it wasn't stollen and no liens.Then I called that State's DMV and asked them what to do to clear it and they told me how to do it. Oh.. that service cost me $2.50 for the search. Don't remember the name of it but they find it by using the vin .

 

stereomind i live in Nowata and the bike is in Tulsa. I am still wondering about putting a springer front end on it and I was also looking at the Jap cycle gallery and saw a bunch that I really liked that had just been bobbed and not hard tailed. So I am kinda thinking maybe doing something like one of them instead for this bike and then getting me a chain drive this summer or this comming winter to play with also.

 

I think yahama virago rims are a direct bold in, they're wire, and i have yet to see a stretched in the rear shaft drive... its possible

Woo Hoo I finally managed to get a ride that wouldn't flake out on me and made it to get the bike. I will be starting to get parts and take parts off to build the bike. I will try to get pics up soon of what it looks like and will be trying in the next few days to find out if the bike is stolen and see about getting me a title in my name. I am still alittle undecided on wether to do the brat style look or go with the hard tail on it. When doing the hardtail with leaving the shaft and swingarm as the lower part of the tail how excatly are they bolting on the rear wheel are they flatening the ends of the tubes or are they plugging them and just drilling a hole for the bolt to go through?

You can call the police with the bike's VIN and they can tell you if it's stolen. I also have a number and email addy for the title-42 person if you wanna go that route...

Next stop, get a maintenance manual. Best investment you can make on that '81. Then read it through a few times. Once you think you have a grasp of it all, read it again. Then comb through the forums with search and look at what others have done.

yeah looking at getting one of them in a couple of days. I found out it was an 81 after I got it home the guy said it was an 82 but it's not. I got some pics on photo bucket of it and some of the pieces it was in. Since in pieces I get to do what ever I want and it's already tore down for me(saves me time). I was wondering about performance mods to do on the engine I am still doing alot of searches and reading for info but if anyone got the info handy would make it easier for me lol. I was also looking at maybe putting in a 750 engine but kinda want to keep the engine and frame together so that is why I am looking for performance parts and info.

Don't worry about not having the "right" engine in the frame- - you are building a custom anyway, and a Seca 750 engine would be considered an upgrade, just like wire rims is an improvement, not "factory".

As far as a "time saver", an assembled, tested engine for $200 is a money saver as well. Your biggest time saver- - don't stretch or hard-tail it. Just short shocks.

 

So a bike ain't like a car I know alot of people want the factory engine in the car but just beefed up a bit and that is what I was thinking about a bike but if it don't matter might not worry about it. What excatly is the difference between a Seca 750 and a Maxim 750 engine.?

 

There's an odd issue with the shifter, as the Maxim uses an oddball linkage, (the shift pattern is inverted),and the Maxim is geared about 8% taller to compensate for the smaller rear rim. There's also an oil cooler on the Seca engine.

 

Also the Maxim engine has rubber mounts, where the Seca mounts are rigid. Some finagling is required to get around that.

AFAIK the oil cooler is not stock on all models, but there are a few aftermarket coolers available... The 650 Turbo has a factory cooler, but the adapter plate will not fit any other engine.

As for the shifter thing... Can't you just swap the shifter cover? I've not done the swap yet (waiting for the original motor to kick the bucket) but it seems that the shift shaft is the same on both, but the Seca has the weird extra shaft and the bridge thingy.
