    now every time i hit the starter button, when she fires she revs to 11000 in half a second, i'm barely fast enough to hit the kill switch before she hits 12, the throttle cable is sticky, but its always in closed position when this is happening, choke is completely off, gas is in on position and not prime, i've pulled the carbs off and started inspecting them to see if anything is caught inside the butterfly valves, i'm completely lost, do i go buy a ton of carb cleaner and tear them down to bare bones or do i take them to the local yamaha shop and have them rebuild them. or even further, is it possible my intake boots between the carbs and the heads have an air leak and that's why it's rocketing to 11 grand? help me please oh wonderous masters of the xj's

    It's more likely you A: mixed up the throttle and choke cables upon reassembly;

    or B: Snagged the throttle shaft "quadrant" on the fins on the back of the motor and it was being held open.

    Whether you do your own carbs or TRY to find someone who will actually do them right is up to you. Good luck on that. You'll save a lot of money and learn a lot doing it yourself; plus you'll know it's been done right.

    this is the first time i've ever taken the carbs off, is it possible that something got caught in one of the carbs and held it wide open?
