I have a beautiful 1981 xj maxim, that runs very nicely [after time and some money]. I now need a new set of mufflers . I want to keep both left and right , by that I mean I don't want to go to the 4 into 1 system that "Mac" is selling. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome.

To start with, are you looking for a stock look and sound?
or do you prefer a little noise to keep the cagers paying
    attention?

Do you have pods or airbox?
There are a lot of ways you can go with this depending on your set-up,
some will require rejetting the carbs, others will not.

Post a pic or two or a description of the intake set-up, you're bound
to get lots of advice from the members here.

    good luck.

There are a lot of slip ons you can get that would fit. Mac actually makes slip-on dual mufflers.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll try soon to post some pics, but the ''maxim'' really is Cherry. It's presently all stock[lots of new parts] .I wouldn't mind louder mufflers-than the stockers------for the cagers and myself lol. No mods yet and the airbox is stock;which I'll probably keep. By the way this thing just runs great and will really screams [not being abused].

What did you end up going with for an exhaust? I'm in the market right now as well and curious.

That advice would be great as I need the same solution with no real answers. Local bike shop has never had universal parts tried and has no advice other than buy 'em and try 'em.
