Hello all, Im Jesus, I just recently purchased an 1982 XJ750. The bike has alot of sentimental value to me as it was once owned by someone i care about but he passed away. Anywho i want to keep the bike in running condition. I have been having some problems with the bike actually turning on off the normally battery power. I have checked to see if the battery is bad and from what i have been told the battery is in fine working condition. Has anyone or does anyone know what can possibly be wrong here? Any help is appreciated.

Start by checking the battery with a volt meter when you shut the bike off. Then check every couple of hours and in the morning and see how much charge you lose. If the battery is bad you will have low voltage very quickly after shutting the bike off. Welcome to the site.

Bring the fully charged Battery to AutoZone and have its performance checked for Reserve Cranking Amps.

Fill-out the Signature Section of your Account.
    Thumbs of information.
Year -- Model -- Miles -- Stock or Mods.

You must understand that to get the best performance from the Bike you need to have it in an advanced state of tuning.
Embark on that project one step at a time.

Try jump starting the bike with a known good battery (car battery is OK, as long as the car is not running). If it starts right up, then your battery is not charged / defective. If it runs, then check the voltage across the battery - you should get between 13.5 to 14.5V when the bike is running. If this checks out, then the battery may just need a good charge or it may need to be replaced.

If the bike won't start with the car battery, then either your starter motor or solenoid are defective and you will need to delve deeper to get it up and running. There are posts in here to check / fix these (do a search).

    Good luck with it

Just a little caveat, Hillsy, motor must be spinning at better than 2k to achieve that voltage output.

An '82 Bike might have enough hours on it to need Alternator Brushes.

If you don't know when the last time the Carbs were off and Cleaned ... do them too.

Thanks guys after taking a volt meter to the battery charging the battery i tryed to start it. I was only getting 7v just enought to turn the engine but not get it started. I will be replacing it with a new battery and also invest in a Tender to keep it up to shape.

Also a big WOW to how quickly everyone responded Obviously you guys are bigtime XJ lovers. I appricate the help everyone...
