Schooter, who has been a huge motivator for me and my project as has been many of you, just mentioned citrus engine cleaner and simple green. I keep hearing reference to it but nothing else. I mean... I have sprayed foaming engine brite on there and rinsed it off but that is it.
Is this citrus and simple green stuff really awesome, like change the world kind of stuff?
I am just trying to change the world, guys. LOL

both are degreasers, le the sit and soak in awhile, then buy some tooth brushes at the dollar store and scrub the poo out of it. Then sit it up with some simple green, and then scrub the poo out of it. Then rinse her off.

though- if you plan on replacing the valve gasket, maybe you could hit up the really tough spots with carb cleaner, that will melt all the goo away

Citrus cleaners and Soylent (Simple) Green are good products but I prefer the green stuff myself. Not quite as fruity smelling.

I have a little air gun doo hickey that I got from Harbor Freight. Plug it into the compressor with the regulator set at about 60 psi and a long vinyl tube down into the container of Simple Green. Spray the area you want to clean with water so it's thoroughly wet and then spray with the little gun thing. It turns the detergent into a wonderful hard cleaning foam. Rinse with water and you're good to go.

I think HF calls it an engine degreaser.

This product will change the world- - oil and grease are eaten and consumed completely, but you have to keep the area wet for a while.

    http://oilcleanup.tripod.com/bilge-contamination.html

That would be hard to do on an engine. I was searching for another bilge cleaner that turns oil directly to carbon dioxide using a catalyst in the water. These products don't just move the oil, they destroy the oil.

I use Simple Green on both bikes with great results. It even recomnds it for entire bike in my Honda Shadows owners manual. I use it alot in the shop for years (great hand cleaner) and it has a good fragrance. I guess I've used it so long that I keep a gallon jug of it around all the time. I usually mix it half and half with water. I've never found a need to use it full strength so far.

Re: Keep hearing so much about citris and simple green clean

I was sold on Simpleton Green for cleaning greasy car parts. Then when Castrol Super Clean came out, with all the hoopla over it,I tried it when I ran out of Green.

It seemed like the Super Clean required less elbow grease to get the same type of job done,so I stuck with it.Still have a good amount left of a gallon jug I bought many years ago

I found out that Super is not good for plain cast aluminum tho.I tried it on some oil stains on the Harley's engine (oil leaks on a Harley? lol),and it seemed to eat into the aluminum  It also eats skin quite nicely  and what little skin it leaves behind remains slippery feeling for days, even after many very thorough washes 8O

It says Simple Green is safe for all motorcycle surfaces (atleast Hondas anyways) I'm sure Harley makes their own type of cleaner/degreaser at an exorbited price like everything else they sell.

There's a new "Motorsports Simple Green" out now (it's blue, go figure) and I had one opportunity to try it before the end of the season.

It seems slightlly more effective then the original.

Re: Keep hearing so much about citris and simple green clean

Ain't that the truth  The HD brand oil was $5.50/qt for reg, over $8/qt for syn, last time I was in an HD dealership a couple years ago 8O That'd REALLY be expensive with an older Hog,when they were so famous for leaking.Mine was a 2000,so after I replaced the valve cover gaskets,it didn't leak a drop 8)

Just to be sure there's no confusion,it was the Castrol Super Clean that ate the aluminum, and my hands, not Simple Green

Re: Keep hearing so much about citris and simple green clean

I guess I did use Simple Green full strength when guide plug came lose while on vacation. I had oil sprayed all over the left side of the bike by the time I got home and needed to do some serious cleaning to get it back to normal.
It works good in one of those spray bottles. Just spray it on, leave it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. I never liked using a pressure washer on my bikes anyways.

Here's two of my favorite tips:

    1) After Simple Green cleaning on the engine, the fins will have kind of a dull appearance. That's just the way it looks after you wash off the cleaner. So ... when the engine is dry, spray it with Silicone Spray. Makes the fins and everything look like brand-new shiny paint.

    2) Want to get rid of the gunk on the rear rim... you know, the black caked-on grease from all your chain lube? Spray WD-40 onto an old wash cloth. The gunk wipes right off. Try it!
