Just installing the new ATC fuse box and wire extentions from Len and looks like a clearance issue. Bottom of the seat may be resting on the clear plastic cover for my new fuse box. Any one else have the same issue or did you come up with a better location. The bike I'm working on is the 83 750 Maxim.

    Thanks

I think all he has are the 550's and those are way different than my bikes. The original location is right on the air box lid and Ltdave shows his there but looking at mine it looks like the seat pan would need to be modified to keep it there. The fuse box was 1/8" lower it might clear OK.

I was going to use this box for my 1100 but I thought since this bike needs one I'll just get another one.

    XJ550 models:

XJ650 all models (except Turbo) and all 1981-83 XJ750 models: the stock fusebox lays on top of the air cleaner box lid. The replacement fuseblock can go in the same area, but some care must be taken as to positioning to make sure that the bottom of the seat pan does not contact the top of clear cover of the fuseblock. You will have to slightly reposition the fuseblock from the original mounting holes to get everything to line up properly.

I'm working on an installation template for the 650/750 bikes, to show people exactly where to position the fusebox on the air cleaner lid in order to obtain maximum seat pan clearance; however, even then, it may be necessary to add some thin spacers to the frame rails to make the seat sit up higher about 1/8" and prevent the seat pan from rubbing the fusebox cover. It's a REALLY tight fit under there.......

XJ1100 models: some slight modification to the battery tray will need to be done; here is a good illustration of the installment procedure on these models:

The 6-Place Fuse Panel that's sold by "WireWorks" fits on a Maxim when installed in this configuration.

    Rick,

Thats what I was thinking if I shouldn't try to fit it on top of the battery box. The battery box is slightly lower then the air box lid. I'm going to look at that when I go over to my shop and if it works out I'm going to snap a few pics and put them here later today.

I like to do an install like this that not only is functional but looks nice too. I wish I lived closer to you guys so I could learn more. I'm 52 and I'm always lookiing to make my work look better. My hat is always off to you veteran XJ'ers.

    Thanks for your help.

I had my fuse panel on the top of the airbox at one time also. I eventually busted the cover from one of my seat modifications, so I just taped over it with electrical tape (no issues in the past few years)
I have since extended the wires and moved it down under the left side cover so it's easier to get at. I have it held in place with one good tight screw. It's held up thru alot of bad roads so far, so I guess it's there for the remainder.

Make a Project of it. You and the Bike deserve the nice upgrade.

    Installation tips:
    >> Before deciding where you want the New Fuse Panel, ... Solder and Heat Shrink some new 12" Extension Wires to the Fuse Panel.
    >> Solder and Heat Shrink Extensions to the Bike's Wiring Harness.
    >> Experiment with Placement
    >> Mount new Fuse Panel
    >> Splice Extensions together with Solder and Heat Shrink.
