Just finished my gas tank. Rattle can special. Spent a lot of time on this and pretty happy with it. Can't wait to get the whole bike together and see how it looks. Thought I would share.

Just finished the project after a complete strip down to bare metal, two coats of primer, 3 coats of black paint and then 5 coats of clear done over the last month.

Major sanding in between using 800 grit, then 2000 grit wet then a scratch compound and a buffing rag.

I am pretty happy with the job however, it could be better. I may do some more buffing but for now I am done.

Pictures aren't the greatest but you get the idea.

my view is you spent so much time getting it just right... why put that on there.. nothing against yamaha... but to work so hard and have that on to me spoils it.

Thanks Skillet... I have another tank I will be doing soon. Will either keep it as a spare or sell it. It is just collecting dust at the moment.

Looks great! I also think the Yamaha badges take away from the paint job. With them on there, it just looks like another Yamaha tank with graphics added. Without them, it would looks more like a custom. That's just me.

I think it looks awesome! Even the badges.
I think, if it were me, I would have done some type of ghost flame badges painted into the black color. Great job man. Any chance you can PM me a how to on your process? I suck at painting, but am getting ready to give it a shot this spring on a 750 maxim tank for my 650.

as far east as you can get in michigan 43.027407,
because you shot into the light (primarily) without enough light being reflected onto the shaded (shadows) side of the tank (secondly) resulting in under exposure...

i think i would have left both the maltese cross and the yamaha plates off, but i think it looks pretty good...

are the gold stripes painted or pin striping tape?

They sell "chameleon" in rattle can- - my 750 frame is done in the color shift paint- - it changes color as you walk around the bike.
You could lay down ghost flames before the clear coat.
Awesome paint job Vintage, but remember to bring a rag when you gas up, just in case.

Thanks alot guys... Good point on the underexposure. I did shoot it right in front of the slider.

The gold is tape pin stripe. It came out better than I thought. At first I just had the white stripe. I liked it, but it reminded me of " Go speed racer" Don't ask me why. So I then added one stip of the pin stripping to transition the 2 colors. It still looked a bit off so I laid out a second and I liked it.

The iron cross is there for my German heritage.

Wow. You do this great looking paint job with rattle cans and all people can say is," I woulda done this..." or, " I wouldnt have done that..." The reason the YAMAHA badges and Iron Cross are on the tank is because it's HIS tank on HIS bike.
The real story here is that you were able to get a quality paint job on your tank with rattle cans. Something any true do-it-yourselfer with a limited budget can appreciate. It just goes to show that time and effort will always overcome lack of funds. For those of you that would have done something else, go to the nearest parts store, buy a few cans and knock yourself out. Then post here so everyone can tell you what you should have and shouldnt have done.

Amazing paint job! What's your address? I've got a Seca 400 tank that could use your touch.
