I know this topic has been discussed to death but here goes...

I have an '82 XJ750 that is running way to rich. I have tried adjusting the mixture screws, they are all 2 turns out from seated, and it is still too rich(black sooty plugs). I am contemplating switching to air filter pods to allow more airflow. Is this a good Idea? Feedback from both sides of the fence would be apreciated.

When is the last time you replaced the air filter?
Are the plugs gapped correctly and firing consistently?

(I know this isn't your question, exactly, but it seems (to me anyway) that your problem will be best fixed by finding its cause, which may or may not require a different air filtration system.

Only two turns out should be way too lean actually. Problem likely elsewhere.

High float levels can make the bike run rich no matter what you do; have you checked your float levels using fluid and the "clear tube" method as prescribed in the service manual?

Re-engineering the air filter isn't a viable way to "fix" a carb problem.

Another item to ckeck, some slack in the enrichment "choke" cable, and that all the little forks drop all the little plungers seated.

    Pods won't solve your problem.

    The Good News is:

When the Bike is running RICH, ... it's a whole lot easier to Tune-up than one with Pods running Lean.

Look to see what JETS you are running.
You might only need to make a simple correction.

The filter is new, choke cable is new, no slack, functioning properly, plugs are gapped and firing properly. Haven't checked the float level yet, doing that next...

You need a little slack to function properly.
